Injured JvD teen on recovery road despite irreversible spinal injury
Relatives in an update on Sunday, July 2, 2023, said the teen whose name was given as Elijah Chinnery, arrived at the Medical Center to undergo a 1 and 1/2-hour surgery to remove fragmented bones from his neck.
As a result of the swimming accident at White Bay, the teen’s vertebrae within his neck reportedly broke into pieces, and this has affected his spine, and resulted in paralysis.
Relatives share that the surgery entailed entering the neck through the front to remove the bones in the back, and after the removal of the fragmented bones, an implant will be inserted which will be accompanied by a plate with screws to keep the implant in place.
Damage to spine irreversible - Family
According to the information, our news Centre understands that the damage to the spine cannot be reversed, however, with extensive therapy the teen is on the road to recovery, and the success of the surgery will determine whether he will walk again.
“He is a fighter, so he will walk again, continued prayers for Elijah is appreciated,” a relatives shared in a Facebook page.
Sources told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) that the incident initially took place shortly after noon on Friday when the boy was injured when someone mistakenly jumped on him while he was in the water.
A Go-fund-Me has been set up for Elijah where some $43,000 of a $50,000 target has already been donated up to publication time.
