DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI –“In building character we insist that players be discipline in order to play in the league, we have also established a low threshold for rudeness and misbehavior of any sort, thus [is] our commitment to a programme prepared to implement and execute rules that adhere to a policy built on and around the principles of zero tolerance.”

That was the emphatic statement made by Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), the owner, founder and main sponsor of the Hon. Julian Fraser/Save the Seed Basketball League which was officially declared open yesterday August 15, 2014 at the Save the Seed Centre with much pomp and ceremony.

The games which have successfully entered its 2nd anniversary, are being run with three main aims in mind, to build character among our youth, to provide good competition and to entertain fans all of which Hon Fraser and his team are very confident will be achieved.

“Our objective in this endeavor goes far and beyond providing an opportunity for a group of young men to occupy their time at the expense of sponsors. Instead, it is the fulfillment of a dream born by the Bishop through his Save The Seed Centre; and, it is a commitment of mine to ensure prudent and managed succession in the Territory,” reiterated Hon Fraser in the presence of the participating teams, sponsors, key stakeholders and a number of fans.

He told the players of his vision of them when he said, “I see the same group of young men from among whom the future members of the House of Assembly could be drawn. I see the same group of young men from among whom this Territory could rely upon as part of its succession planning programme.”

He reminded the spectators that he and his co-partner Bishop John I. Cline were not there for political reasons, to get them to join his church respectively. “As a matter of fact I promise you that during your time here you will not hear a single sermon preached, and neither will you be asked to join my political party,” stated Hon Fraser.

He noted that coming off the League’s 1st experience of last year 2013 they have learned a great deal about the readiness of teams and what is needed to be done to make the League better.

“Despite having some very good teams in the League, I will be the first to admit that there was room for improvements, and that those improvements were best attained through a concerted effort to execute a programme which involved greater player integration,” he said.

Over the course of the offseason the League has proffered many suggestions, including a Draft, which was considered a novel idea. The Draft was adapted by the League, and implementation took place on Wednesday August 13, 2014. The process allowed teams in this League to enhance their game by selecting players from among the Federation's best, by way of a lottery.

Among those present were Co-Partner of the League Bishop John I. Cline, Mr Paul A. Hewlett, Director of Sports in Department of Youth Affairs representing the Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn and the Caribbean Insurers Limited Team Ms Jackie Malone and Ms Simone T. Monsanto, First District Representative Honourable Andrew A. Fahie among others.
