TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- The Virgin Islands (VI) is better connected to the rest of the Caribbean region due to the commencement of flights to and from the VI by Caribbean Airlines.

That’s according to Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) during a special ceremony to mark Caribbean Airlines’ inaugural flight to the VI on October 14, 2024.

Hon Wheatley said these new four times weekly flights to and from Puerto Rico, Antigua and Barbados, is a significant step in boosting connectivity and accessibility of the VI with the world and, importantly, Caribbean people.

“The islands and people of the Caribbean share a common heritage, culture, and destiny, and it cannot be overstated how much inter-regional travel is a lifeline for connecting our people, fostering economic growth, and promoting cultural exchange. Many people who live and work in the BVI have ties across the Caribbean region, whether through business, family, or friendships,” the Premier stated.

These new flights, he continued, will mean a lot to the residents of the Territory who have made the VI their home for work as they are now able to have “reliable, convenient, and affordable air transport”.

Economic growth and unity with Caribbean Airlines’ flights

Inter-regional travel, the Premier added, catalyses economic growth, open new markets, create jobs and stimulate investment.

“For the Virgin Islands, increased connectivity means more opportunities for our tourism sector—the backbone of our economy—and for developing new sectors. It means more visitors to our shores, more business for our hotels, restaurants, and local artisans, and more opportunities for local businesses to expand outward. It means a brighter future for our people,” he said.

Premier Wheatley said connectivity also fosters a sense of unity and cultural exchange, allowing for the sharing of unique traditions, music and cuisine by Caribbean neighbours, strengthening the “bond and friendship and solidarity” that has been in the region.

“We are building a stronger, more united Caribbean by bridging the distances between our islands...This inaugural flight begins a new chapter in our journey towards more excellent connectivity,” the Premier stated.

Message for the Govt St. Kitts. Lot of us want to come for Carnival but we refused to pay Winair $700.00. Look into this. Hope BVI paying attention. I can tell Winair. Soon you will be gone.

Caribbean airlines is not like win-air or inter Caribbean airlines. It has big jets that does direct flights into Miami , New York and Canada to name a few big cities, if you look at their fares to those destinations you would notice it’s as cheap and cheaper in most cases than their competitors. They are not an airline that practices price gouging.
