It noted that in the past week, both residential properties and businesses have fallen victim to break-ins and attempted break-ins, many resulting in the theft of cash and valuable items.
Tips to secure homes & businesses
In a press release today, Thursday, October 12, 2023, from the RVIPF, residents were urged to take proactive steps to enhance the security of their homes and businesses.
Tips included installation of CCTV cameras; utilizing alarm systems and ensure that the exterior of properties is well lit; Securely locking doors and windows, especially when away from premises; regularly inspecting and maintaining the locking mechanisms on all windows, ensuring that they are fully operational; safeguarding valuable possessions by photographing them in their respective locations within home; and establish a neighborhood watch group which can be conveniently organised through a WhatsApp platform.
In the neighbourhood watch group setup, residents within a specific neighborhood can serve as the vigilant observers, promptly reporting any suspicious incidents they come across to their fellow community members and the Police.
3 burglaries & 4 attempted within past 48 hrs- RVIPF
According to the RVIPF, Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Acting Detective Chief Inspector Vernon Larocque, recorded three burglaries and four attempted burglaries within the past 48 hours.
"Both residential and businesses have reported multiple break-ins within the past few days. While the residential burglaries have predominantly been attempted intrusions rather than successful breaches, the volume of reports remains a cause for concern,” Mr Larocque stated.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Mark Collins aims to reassure the public: "Our Officers are committed to investigating and prosecuting the offenders of these crimes. We need the public's help in identifying and apprehending these criminals, so if you see something, say something."
Persons who can assist police with information into any of those burglaries can confidentially call the Crime Stoppers line 800-8477 (TIPS) or overseas call 1-284-800-8477 with the relevant information or contact the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 368-9339.
