‘I’m not running’- Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith
On April 2, 2015 President of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Mr Carvin Malone had issued a press release in which Mr Smith was named as a possible Territorial At Large candidate on a preliminary listing of names submitted for examination by the District Committees and by the Screening Committee for nomination for the four (4) Territorial At Large seats.
The popular sports figure Mr Smith, who in January of this year tendered his resignation as President of the BVI Softball Association, had been listed alongside Irene Penn-O’Neal, Elton L. “All out” Sprauve (now 9th District), Charmine Rosan-Bunbury, Keith L. Flax, Dr Vincent G. Scatliffe, Rajah A. Smith and Milton C. McLean.
The press release also said four other At Large names submitted were to be confirmed.
Not running
“I’m not running, I’m not running,” Mr Smith told Virgin Islands News Online on April 21, 2015.
The veteran softball player and businessman said he didn’t wish to say anything further right now but promised this news site an interview at a later date.
Contacted, VIP President Mr Carvin Malone said he didn’t have a response to Mr Smith’s announcement as yet since the party goes along with the report of the District Committees, “so that when they bring back their report to us we would be able to handle the affairs and be able to respond to it accordingly.”
It has been long reported that many voters were calling for Mr Smith, who is from the eastern end of the island of Tortola, to throw his hat in the political ring. Many residents had reportedly encouraged him to run either in the Eighth District against the newcomer Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8) of the National Democratic Party or to run At Large.
Mr Smith has been tight lipped on his intentions until now.
Meanwhile, following submittal of names by district committees, the Screening Committee will complete their final report after the closing date for official nominations has been determined and thereafter Congress would be convened for ratification or elections of the 9 district seats and of the 4 Territorial At Large seats.
“Until such process is completed, with the exception of districts 1 and 3, all other 11 seats are to be finalised,” the VIP press release had stated.
VIP officials have speculated that a snap-election may be called for early July, 2015 prior to the August festival activities.
