'I'm not for it': Opposition Leader labels VI Inquiries Bill as 'dictatorial'

Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) did not mince words in his contribution to the debate of the Virgin Islands Inquiries Bill 2024 at the 15th Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) today, July 16, 2024, calling it one step away from outright dictatorship. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI—Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) did not mince words in his contribution to the debate of the Virgin Islands Inquiries Bill 2024 at the 15th Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) today, July 16, 2024, calling it one step away from outright dictatorship.

The bill was brought to the HoA by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) on behalf of the Governor.

The Opposition Leader said, “I read between the lines of the Premier that he doesn't agree with a lot of this stuff.”

Hon Skelton posited “I think that's what is happening here, and I hope that the other Ministers will get up and voice their concern over this Bill because I know the colonial thing does bind you collective responsibility but I think the Ministers are collective in their responsibility on this Bill.” That is, “they don't agree with a lot of stuff so they need to say so and not just have us in the opposition guessing.”

In rejecting the Bill in its present form, Hon Skelton was unwavering in his position that the proposed legislation simply puts too much power in the hands of the UK’s representative and would lead to the dismantling of institutions already in place. “Some of this stuff doesn't make sense. Here is the icing on the cake, the governor in his own deliberate mind may make regulations for giving effect to this provision of this act, without Cabinet, without the HOA; this kinda behaviour in this act cannot be right.”

According to the Opposition Leader, the bill needs "surgery" and he doesn't think that in today’s relationship with Britain, this is the right piece of legislation. He argued that there “are all kinda of laws in place that you can investigate whatever you need to investigate, you have a whole police force at your disposal. Why do this? This (Bill) is a destructive force [that] needs to stop before it happens.”

Send us a Bill that makes 'sense'- Hon Skelton

According to Skelton, “We cannot allow this Bill to go like how it is; tell him (to) send us a Bill that makes sense; let us make laws for the good government and good governance of our country, not dictatorship, I am not for it Madam Speaker.”

He prefaced his arguments by saying, “You hear about socialism you hear about communism, totalitarianism, if this is not close to one of those totalitarianism, this is as close as you can get to dictatorship.” To this end, he contends, “any educated person sitting in any place of authority, if they can read this Bill and believe in their mind in their conscience, in their spirit if they have one, that this makes sense in a modern democracy something has to be wrong.”

Honourable Skelton added: “If you look at history, wherever the UK was in charge and the local representative had no authority to do anything, nothing happens; we have a good sense, we have a good responsibility, we know what we want, what we need to build our country, yes there are problems we just go doing things without rules and regulations but Madam Speaker this Bill before the House says that the Governor is responsible for calling a CoI. It is just ridiculous in a modern democracy like we have now," Hon Skelton argued.

If what I read is true, in reference the Opposition Minister, Hon. Ronnie Skeleton, I too will not be able to see a fair partnership with the UK, if we are not involved in policies that will affect our human rights in our country of birth.

Dictatorship is of the devil, same as totalitarian and commonist rule are. While I don't have the power to repel this possessive attitude of the UK government, I oppose even the very though of such infringement on our human rights.

Up with love, down with dictatorial hatred.
Up with equality, down with inferiority.
Up with good governance, down with totalitarian rules.

Gone are the day when our ancestors was slaughtered because of the colour of their skin.

We have the opportunity for self-determination but instead of acting on it, we are slowly going back to the original form of colonialism. Where have locals prospered under colonial rule? No matter what they say if they rule the locals will be on the bottom.

His Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition, commonly known as the Official Opposition in the United Kingdom, is the main political opposition to His Majesty's Government. This is usually the political party with the second-largest number of seats in the House of Commons, as the largest party will usually form the government. Since July 2024, the Official Opposition has been the Conservative Party, led by former British prime minister Rishi

I don't care. After see y'all drag y'all feet with these reforms I glad the UK looking to get more power and leg room to keep y'all wild dog's on a leash.

Y'all literally allowed a rapist to be nationalised. Y'all sick in y'all head.

UK do what you gotta do to rein in these mad people mehson.

People suffering, the place looks like a 3rd world country but running on US dollar. Sewage in the roads. Power cutting off with a lil thunder storm, bank interest highest in the Caribbean. Grocery bills steady changing frequently.

To fix these things by my own black Govement seems to be an impossible task. But when it comes to making a quick dollar of we tax money that don't seem impossible. Y'all immoral and need to be handled. The people in this country to weak to stand up for what is right so we take knock about for years.

We see something in the news that we don't like. We complain in the blogs and it's left and forgetten until the next scheme from our government family and friends.

The grant scheme still hurting my head to this day. No heart whatsoever

When it comes to protecting themselves, they are very aggressive, articulative and energetic. When it comes to representing and defending the people we don't get that same Energy. Minimum wage hardly hear anything from the opposition. Ronnie did suggested and increase in tax exemption as a quick relief but throw the towel in quickly...Britain playing this "Sorry for marga Dog Game" We know what happen, that Marga Dog will bite them". Britain just need to make the bolt step, avoid all the bla bla and Drama. Take over. Pass the laws that would ensure good Governance put them to work. Have them working, then call local elections

Do we have to accept the UK'S dictatorial fist because of our local politicians misbehaviour?
No! We don't. Partnership means togetherness, not individualism.
The Topic Issue at hand is not reasonable way curb politicians greediness in the BVI. All politicians worldwide have a measure of political bias in them.

I agree with the opposition leader the our president governor should not be allowed to be the only to one to have a say on this matter. We have the God-given rights to have a say on all matters that could negatively affected ours and our children and grandchildren present and future here in the British Virgin Islands. Amen.
