'I’m just here to help because the country needs help’– L. Allen Wheatley
“The team here, along with all the civil servants, need some experience to help them and that's the reason I'm here, to just help, because the country needs help,” he said.
Mr Wheatley’s official campaign in the Eighth District kicked off at 7:00 PM last evening March 23, 2023, in East End, Tortola where the candidate received sweeping recommendations from other members of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government.
People must be willing to fight for VI - Wheatley
“This is our country, if we are not willing to help our country. If we're not willing to fight for our country, then why are we living in this country?.. and why are we crying out to a FCO in London for more help, I don't want no mercy from London,” he added.
Wheatley added that with the finances generated in the Virgin Islands, the United Kingdom can’t see that type of revenue in years while hinting that the economy of the Virgin Islands is far better off than the economy of the UK.
“They're stuff going downhill full speed, don't mind the noise. Every minute you turn around they got some problem and some minister and some issue and something else. Check their economy, watch their statistics.”
Wheatley added, “This economics in England so horrible, I don't know how the governor got good conscience to tell Natalio [Dr Natalio D. Wheatley] anything about finance,” he added.
Major reforms to key areas of economy
Mr Wheatley said that once elected, he will work to reform areas like infrastructure, trade licenses, work permits, immigration, job opportunities, business loans, and more areas of the VI that is in dire need of help.
“Them guys on the block… they may have dropped out of school for different reasons, but a lot of them have met me over the last couple of months and said we need a job,” he added
Mr Wheatley said he is willing to give a chance to those willing to work and he will ensure opportunities are available as part of his campaign promise.
Meanwhile, Premier Wheatley described the VIP's Eighth District candidate as an intellectual, who was instrumental in helping the late Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt and others achieve major projects across the territory during his time as Financial Secretary.
Dr Wheatley also said Mr Wheatley stumbled along the way and fell but he got up back again and is now here to make a valuable contribution to the territory.
The Premier also urged certain critics of Mr Wheatley to "cast the first stone."
