If politicians are corrupt, the UK can set up Inquiry – Maduro
He was one of several politicians including 9th district independent candidates Lorie Rymer, Samuel O’Neal and Devon Osbourne and At Large independent candidate Bertrand Lettsome on a ZROD radio programme which was aired recently.
The revelation of the United Kingdom proposing to see the Virgin Islands’ budget came to light when Deputy Premier Dancia Penn, QC had announced it during her October 8 rally. Since then it is one of the hottest topics amongst politicians.According to Maduro, the VI has passed the stage of Britain putting our budget together.
“For many years now we have a constitution that gives our House the right to do that. Yes I agree that Britain has the responsibility to ensure transparency. She has the right to do that! But when that comes up she must take the bull by the horn and set up a Commission of Inquiry and deal with those who are doing wrong not send up back into colonial behaviour. Her position is wrong,” he charged.
In light of this, he is calling on the Government to tell Britain one thing, “stop taking us back come forward with us, and I firmly state if there is corruption the UK Government has the job to find wherever it is, set up a Commission of Inquiry and send whoever to jail. We don’t want colonial rule. It’s simple as that.”
Touching on the White Paper, the talk show host and politician opined that it seems as though Britain is taking over the management of the VI’s Government.
“She is out of place and I have no regret of saying that. With this White Paper it should be the British responsibility to send it through the Government. Let the Government go around and pick up the information, put it together, let the people approve it and then send it to Britain. Britain is interfering with our rights to govern ourselves. It is disrespectful and I have no qualms about it,” he stated.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary, William Hague, had announced to Parliament on September 14, 2011 that the government had agreed the principles of a new strategy for the Overseas Territories (OTs). The British government said it would hold consultations in the OTs on the White Paper with the governments of each Territory, as well as with members of the public.
The UK government’s overall vision is for the OTs “to be vibrant and flourishing communities, proudly retaining aspects of their British identity and generating wider opportunities for their people.”
