ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Former First Lady of the Virgin Islands (VI) Ms Lorna G. Smith, OBE, who entered the 2023 political race as an Independent At-large Candidate, has now joined the National Democratic Party (NDP) slate as an At-Large Candidate for the 2023 General Elections in the VI.

Mrs Smith in the March 21, 2023, edition of ‘Cut Deep’ hosted by Cindy Rosan said her intention was never to fool anybody, but rather, to get the views of the people without a party affiliation.

'I am honest & forthright' - Lorna G. Smith

“One thing I am is honest and forthright, I would not bamboozle anybody or fool anybody. When I decided to run for political office, I did start out as an Independent. I wanted to get the views of the people of the BVI without a badge, without a party.

“I wanted people to be able to speak frankly to me and I did get that from them and they continue and I know they will continue to speak to me very freely and I was encouraged, by that,” she said.

On Saturday, March 18, 2023, Mrs Smith appeared on the campaign stage of the National Democratic Party and pushed the mission of the NDP as the best government for the VI, despite her first starting out as an Independent and against party politics.

On that same day, Mrs Smith's social media pages rebranded to NDP imagery.

Views still align with NDP - Lorna G. Smith

Mrs Smith on the Cut Deep show; however, said her decision to flip from being an Independent candidate to joining the NDP was because her views still aligned with the party.

“Last week Wednesday, I made an announcement that I would be joining the National Democratic Party, and there were a couple of reasons for it. One is that my views are very closely aligned with those of the National Democratic Party,” she added.

Mrs Smith said the National Democratic Party has accomplished a lot over its 20-year history and that nobody is perfect, mistakes were made; however, she needed a team.

"I am a member of the National Democratic Party, but I expect to maintain my own voice, my own thinking as we go forward," she said.

I am not voting for anyone who has sell us out and working behind the scenes with the colonial powers to try to influence the outcome of the elections. Notice how many press conferences the colonial power is having lately talking only controversial things knowing full well that he is trying to put negativity in the minds of the people against our own people while he gets a free pass.

You hit the nail on the head. This woman has no regard for the common man. Also, it is clear that she has no confidence in Marlon as the Head (which is most of BVI), and he has no confidence and trust in her which is why she launched as an independent candidate at first but now join the NDP to try to save face and try to fool the people. She is in a political marriage of convenience that will never work.

It is not unusual for a failed project to cost millions. Neither is it unusual for projects to fail. What is wholly avoidable, is accepting payment for facilitating the smuggling of drugs...

Just stop the @#$%&* nonsense now. You are not even elected and already fooling people. 25 April will meet you up McNamara watering your plants and cleaning your pool, HOA you will NOT be!

Her switching to NDP is not news. What would have been news if she had truly and officially brake with the NDP which she tremendous influence and de facto power over. Wait for it. She would deny she was the de facto leader. OK. She had a 1-minute chat with people so what did she find out. Apparently, not much l, for she quickly race back home to the NDP. Indeed, dabbling with an independent run was pure bamboozlement. She and the NDP bamboozled the people for decades, ie, $7.2M plane giveaway. Now she think she can continue. Time is up so take a seat or two. If things start bad, they will end badly and they have. Go siddung.Honest, Trust, Integrity, loyalty?

The issue is this person cannot connect with the common woman or man. Many people in high places will vote for her, they've come out and said it, and believe that her high society status gives her automatic rights to lead, those are facts! But can any honest and average person in this country see this person walking and talking amongst us commoners? Sunday Morning Well, or any of the talking places in our Districts where we gather? No Sah!

People her behavior alone shows that the NDP is not an organized Party. Come on my People. As the wife of the former Premier and one of the founding members of the NDP,why should she start off her political career as an independent candidate.
Was she playing hard to get,or I different from them or what. Now don't be fool.
They are the same National Doze Of Poison ( NDP)

I must reiterate the fact that a representative of the people should have had some contact with those very people you claim to represent.
Unfortunately this lady has had no such contact. When was the last time any regular person on the street or person down on their luck could say she stopped by and offered to listen much less offered to help?
Is this who you want to represent you?
Respond at the poling station please.

The woman spends countless hours volunteering in the community every week and has done so for years. If this is not common knowledge that is simply a reflection of her modesty.

Was she an elitist when she was working hard along with others to build this country so the next generation could have an equal chance to make something of themselves? BVI people stop being ungrateful we are in a crisis. Face the truth, face the truth if we dont make a good change with competent and mature people we will be the laughingstock of the world.

Especially after the people knew that Bummer was still pulling the strings which he has to what other source he has to get money. Lorna like every other person has their faults but we need her knowledge and know how.

Elitism and ‘lil man ‘ and those they view as the underclass in the BVI are incongruent. The thumb their noses at the underclass, the working class until they them to advance their agenda, ie, their votes. They need the poor and working class vote to get into the HoA to advance the elitist s agenda, ie, pass laws that are favorable to them. Now all of a sudden at the speed of sound they find the lil man pretending that they are humble and civil and are so interested in improving their socioeconomic condition, etc. Pure pretense, lies, fraud, etc. After election, they pull a disappearing act until the next election campaign. Fool me shame on me; fool me twice shame on you. Most of us are not alumni of the UWI but we graduated from the School of Hard Knocks and can spot a fraudster a country mile away. We have bought elitist trick before and elect them to office office over and over because of their status but they have been disappointment. Historically, we have bought in to the lie and belief; it is time to stop and elect the real deals, not 3-dollar bill fakes.

It's because of folks such as Mrs Smith that these VI rose above the doodles of so call
"Independent "Caribbean Islands. She is an example of what BVIslanders were and the reason investors saw fit to invest and contribute positively to our economy, Half of allyo n ever had a pot to hiss in and could nevermatch the bottom of her shoes. No she is not common trash and neither is her life mate and his generations of family and others of these VI. Whether or not she and others of known respect is elected it is unlikely no impact on her life but it will on the lives of many others clinging to the VI, The UK is right there in the wings and ready to grasp the reins. Personally I am grateful to Lorna and the few who stepped in .. They are the ones that is shining a light with intelligence, experience and a proper past. They care about their BVI and Is willing to suffer the blows of the all too popular common and vulgar ignorance.. I miss my BVI, and have grieved but at this point what and who remains can kiss my ash,set of ungrateful dead wood.
