'I was a sacrificial lamb'- Speaker Willock on being forced to resign
Hon Willock, who earlier today, May 3, 2022, announced that he will be resigning from the HoA, said the ultimatum came from Acting Premier, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) following meetings with United Kingdom (UK) officials.
“It appears as if there is no natural justice in this country, it appears that you could just be a target for not doing anything wrong. I have never betrayed my oath of office, but there must be some sort of natural justice in this country,” Hon Willock told reporters on the sidelines of the HoA.
“People must resign if they do something wrong, I have not done anything wrong,” the Speaker maintained.
Hon Willock, responding to questions from the media, said he knows the real reason why he was being forced out of office, as revealed in a conversation with the Acting Premier.
Speaker a 'Sacrificial lamb'?
“I feel that I was a sacrificial lamb, but I will not betray any conversation that I had with the Acting Premier. I have a lot of respect for the Acting Premier, he means well,” Hon Willock added, highlighting that Dr Wheatley is now in a precarious situation in office.
Hon Willock said that throughout his life in public office and as Speaker, no one can point to any misconduct, misappropriation of funds, illegal activity, or corruption associated with him.
Hon Willock had filed an injunction against three Commission of Inquiry (CoI) lawyers who were deemed to be in violation of the Legal Professions Act; however, the case was subsequently aborted.
Surprisingly, Hon Willock was ordered to pay court fees out of pocket by Judge Adrian Jack.
The Speaker said that, for now, he will turn over his vehicle and mobile phone ahead of submitting his resignation letter.
Hon Willock, in a statement in the HoA, said he asked the Acting Premier during the telephone conversation if he was aware that he did anything wrong; whether he had any knowledge that he was implicated in any aspect of the Commission of Inquiry Report; or had any knowledge that he was under active investigation on any matter of governance or misconduct while in office and he was told 'no' to all three questions.
