‘I think my country wanted it more than me’- Kyron A. McMaster
McMaster ran a strategic race, overcoming fast starter Jaheel Hyde of Jamaica to win the 400m Hurdles Final on Saturday, August 6, 2022, in a time of 48.93.
Hyde, who had defeated McMaster in the qualification round, was second in 49.78.
Alistair Chalmers of Guernsey battled past Kenya's Wiseman Were Mukhobe on the home straight to take bronze in 49.97.
‘Significant’ win
“It was very significant. I think my country wanted it more than me this trip around, my family, my friends. For me, I just wanted to get through injury free. That was the biggest thing for me,” McMaster told SportsMax TV just after the race.
The Virgin Islander, the 8th fastest man of all time in the 400m Hurdles, has been troubled by injuries and had to pull out of the semi-finals of the just concluded World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA.
“I know I had to run a well-distributed race. I couldn’t run as hard as I wanted from the start like I usually want to, so I know I had to run it strategically,” McMaster said.
McMaster ‘glad’ to deliver goods for VI
In a separate post-race interview with NLTV Athletics, McMaster shared that the Commonwealth Games gold is one of many medals that he and the Virgin Islands want to collect.
“I feel happy I feel great. I know they proud of me back home and I am glad I could deliver for them again.”
McMaster also said his goal is to bag an Olympic and World Championship title.
“I have been struggling with that. I have been coming fourth, so that is my focus going into next year for Budapest, just getting that medal, getting on the podium.”
