“I don’t think so” - Ronnie W. Skelton on running again
Practical
Mr Skelton made the announcement yesterday, Tuesday, February 27, 2019, during a press conference at the Movement’s headquarters where all the candidates who contested the 2019 General Elections were present and he made it clear that his uncertainty is not based on his loss at the poll.
“I don’t think so. It’s just a matter of being practical in life. I am a very practical person,” Mr Skelton commented.
He said, “I see Bernie Sanders running at 77. I don’t know if I can do those things, but I leave that for the future of the party and the decision, the movement. I won’t make that decision now. I can’t tell you yes, I can’t tell you no.”
Mr Skelton, a founder member of the National Democratic Party (NDP 1) who months before the elections broke away and formed his own party, placed seventh on the list of Territorial At-Large candidates with 2,639 votes in the Monday, February 25, 2019, Virgin Islands (VI) General Election.
Assistant Role – Skelton
But in the meantime, Skelton said that he is focusing on assisting party members in the furtherance of the party.
He said, “We believe that our country and people must come first on the agenda. Any form of corruption must be eliminated, so I will continue to work with my colleagues here and the PVIM to build an organisation, get more new candidates to contest the next General Election,” he said.
On the other hand, Mr Skelton is confident that if he had more time to build the party and campaign, they would have done better at the 2019 polls.
“I think if we had a lot more time we would have been a lot more successful, but that is history now... The majority rules, whatever the majority says should happen, will happen. While we are disappointed with the results, we must accept the democratic system, that the majority rules.”
One seat PVIM
Only one candidate from the PVIM made it into the House of Assembly (HoA), Hon Melvin M. Turnbull aka “Mitch” was re-elected as the representative for District two.
Mr Skelton said that following the VIP victory he did call the new Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and congratulated him.
