ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— The newly inaugurated President of the United States of America (USA), Donald J. Trump, is no ‘role model’ for Premier and Minister for Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7); however, he wishes to see the US maintain a strong economy as that would bode well for Virgin Islands tourism and financial services.

VI’s concern

“Our concern here in the Virgin Islands is that the United States has a strong economy; Of course, they will have lots of internal matters...but it’s important for the world that the United States continues to have a strong economy," Dr Wheatley stated at a press conference today, January 23, 2025, when asked about Mr Trump returning as US President.

Dr Wheatley also pointed out that the VI is dependent on tourists from the US, which is another reason he would like to see the US economy do well.

With this in mind, Premier Wheatley used the occasion to reference past economic struggles in the US, particularly high inflation and expressed hope that Trump’s administration would address these issues effectively. “We know that in the past, of course, they’ve had high inflation; Of course, we would be hopeful that a new president would be able to come up with measures and means to be able to deal with inflation."

A key area of concern disclosed by Premier Wheatley; however, was the potential impact of US fiscal policies on global financial regulations, particularly the Global Minimum Tax, which Dr Wheatley said the Virgin Islands is paying keen attention to.

Trump not a role model of Premier

Asked if his government sees anything from the Trump administration that it may want to pattern, Dr Wheatley said: "I don’t really see Donald Trump as a role model of mine. But, of course, we want the Virgin Islands to be as successful as possible."

He did acknowledge Trump’s willingness to implement changes, which could lead to significant shifts in US policies.

Dr Wheatley opined that the next four years in the US would be “interesting”. “I’ll say strap your seatbelts in because it seems as though Donald Trump is not afraid to make change from the last administration."

because while Trump is a transactional President he can also be petty AF. So even a precieved slight by a small Territory if he finds out , would feel his wrath.

I was about to say the same thing. Look this is not the time to show that you can stand up to Trump . We know that under republican administration the BVI actually does better. You are a head of State and I am on yourside but get your FEELInGS Out of it and use your head and be strategic. Last note, the black american experience is very difference from our own , that playbook might work for them but you have very different circumstances here.

Why would you regard Trump as a role model? What similarities do you both share? Trump identifies as a nationalist, focusing on the needs of his people first. He boldly addresses legislation that many of his citizens disagree with, such as gay rights laws. His decisions reflect a strong sense of independence, as he steers clear of political maneuvers aimed at gaining votes, like ignoring immigration reform. Furthermore, he has taken actions to limit anchor baby privileges at the borders of the U.S.

Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley measure twice and cut once with what you say. The US is a major VI trading partner, along with being the #1 economy, etc. The US can make life challenging for the VI, ie, visa free travel, etc. The US President has and wields tremendous power, which will smoother a small pebble like the VI. Exercise some smart diplomacy.
