'I am now an independent'- Claude O. Skelton-Cline
Skelton-Cline was at the time speaking on his Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Honestly Speaking radio talk show on ZBVI 780AM.
It was his first show since April 25, 2023.
“I want to reiterate for you, I am now an independent. I said that before, but politically. Please understand Claude Skelton-Cline is an independent. They are people, persons, sometimes from various parties in the future whom I will support, whom I will endorse, but me personally, even if I were to join up with somebody, I would join up with an independent,” he said.
He added that party boxes are not expendable enough to bring together all of the Virgin Islands as one people.
“I have come to realise and accept that we're going to have to be more expandable, and there's some things that we're going to have to do together that will bring forth and forward the best that the Virgin Islands yet has to offer.”
Former VIP supporter
While Skelton-Cline in the past has said he will no longer support the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) after being on their platform in the 2019 elections, current Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) had criticised the clergyman as one who hops from party to party based on which benefits him.
“First, he started with the Virgin Islands Party then he went to the National Democratic Party, then he went back to the Virgin Islands Party, and [as] the current leader of the Virgin Islands Party [it] doesn’t seem like I am going to be able to get through with him. Seems like the gravy train might be over there. Let’s jump on to the next host,” Premier Wheatley said of Skelton-Cline.
Dr Wheatley was at the time speaking in the House of Assembly on February 21, 2023.
Skelton-Cline declared “So even as we protect and preserve and prepare our people that are indigenous to the country. We are going to also have to simultaneously do a better job of embracing and properly integrating into the culture, the morals of this Virgin Islands so in the words of my friend Dr Pickering [Kedrick D. Pickering], we can indeed become a great little big nation,” he further detailed as reasoning for ditching parties.
