PETER ISLAND, VI- Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) has expressed her admiration for the newly reopened Peter Island Resort.

The resort was officially opened with a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

Hon Smith, following the ceremony, took to her Facebook Page to share her joy explaining, “My relationship with Peter Island Resort dates back to working with Hon. H. L. Stoutt in the 80s and his vision for Peter Island to be one of BVI’s flagship properties.”

H. Lavity Stoutt, she continued, as the head of Government joined hands with Jay Van Andel, Rich De Vos, and Dr Schaafsma to make it happen and responded to all the Resort’s needs to “keep it near the top globally for years”.

The resort, now relocated to Deadman’s Beach boasts of new amenities. The former Sprat Bay Marina was also reconfigured and relaunched as the Peter Island Yacht Club which includes a full-service marina capable of accommodating superyachts up to 200 feet in length.

‘Worth the wait’- Hon Smith

“Hurricane Hugo happened in [19]89 but though the property closed for a year it re-emerged better than ever and kept shining until 2017 when Irma’s fury all but obliterated it,” she said in her post.

With the ribbon cut by one of the owners, David Van Andel, Hon Smith said a brand new Peter Island emerged with Tortola in the foreground.

“I adore the reimagined Peter Island!” she expressed, “It has been well worth the wait.”

Hon Smith congratulated the Van Andel family and those who kept the vision alive.

We need to reimagine Prospect Reef. We need to have an alternative when Maria's by the Sea is fully booked.

Glad to see that Peter Island is back. But what about our small hotels. No support. Our leaders feel big when they are in the company with the whites. No support for our people.

@Daisy Small, boutique hotels are very popular - look at Sugar Mill. It's about the location, offering and service. Few tourists want to be in a down market, residential neighborhood. Every hotel needs to know its target market and focus on that.

I have listened to Hon. Lorna Smith lambasting the Territory in which she lived for many years. I wondered when her previous trip to Anguilla where she was born. You must first clean the beam from your eyes before cleaning others. Perhaps Hon. Smith needs to visit an eye specialist to check her vision. Or perhaps, she might have consumed fluids that cause her vision to be blurry. It shows clearly that the Premier was justified when he removed her from the government.
