ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Hundreds of persons in the Virgin Islands have benefitted from free dental, optical and medical services offered by the Florida-based non-profit organisation Gifted Hands this week.

The initiative was coordinated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church of the VI and sanctioned by the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA).

Overwhelming response to free clinic

Over 300 persons capitalised on the free health services on Virgin Gorda on Monday, July 1 and Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

229 persons on Tortola accessed the free health services at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on Thursday, July 4, 2024. 106 were for dental, 69 for optical and 54 for medical services.

The health clinic ended today.

One of the founders and Executive Director of United Hands, Ann M. Burnett,  said the vision and mission is simply to help those in need around the world.

Services offered

Among the dental services offered were dental exams, x-rays, fillings, root canals and extraction as a last resort, “because we want to save the teeth.”

Among the optical services rendered were screening for cataracts and glaucoma and visual acuity. Reading glasses, sunglasses or prescription glasses were provided where needed.

Cholesterol and blood sugar testing, lipids as well as a health education session were offered to everyone.

Burnett said the visiting team included 10 dentists, 4 hygienists, 1 medical doctor, and several nurses.

She said typically dental services are in demand; however, “in the Virgin Islands, you guys flipped the script on us. It was eye care services. So, we went heavy on our dental team. We went heavy, we brought a lot of [dental service] providers over and we only had one optometrist.”

Burnett also credited the Pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Virgin Gorda, Trent Berg, who she said was the one who pushed for the team to come to the [British] Virgin Islands.

United Hands has provided similar services throughout the Caribbean, Latin America and South America.

Wrong move. The BVI is too small to have this. They are killing the local practices. Okay, so you do a root canal. How is this going to go forward? Root canals are really funny. They can start to hurt incomplete of days.

As far as dental services go in the BVI, all dental offices are completely overwhelmed to the point that some offices refuse to take on new patients. While others have a 3 to 6 month waiting list. This initiative was needed to help the people and bring some ease to the offices.

Thanks to everyone involved in this much needed initiative. Some of us just can't afford health care services when we need to, even with NHI. Sometimes, it takes forever to get an appointment for dental and eyecare. United Hands did an excellent work over the 4 days and are forever grateful to them. Do come again!

@gratitude. When the incomplete root canal starts hurting, which dentist are they running to?? It's not my practice for sure. They should have never done that root canal.

All Doctors here might be billionaire because of how they abuse NHI not all of us can afford the high copay .....ever think of the employers who take out your tax and don't passed it on to the relevant offices .
As for the eye Doctors here they need help.....yes, I'm speaking from experiences.....do you ever get tested for glasses.....and when you get them, you can't see $hit ...I had that happened to me twice, two different Doctors.....so let's be kind .

I can afford dental, but I went to get a tooth filling because local dentists are filled until November. I wholeheartedly praise this initiative of The Helping Hands Group.
