Hosts VI sweep St Croix Flyballers in Tropical Netball Tournament
The VI girls played unbeaten in the three games played and took the lion’s share of the individual prizes.
After beating the USVI girls 42-18 and 44-19 on Friday and Saturday respectively, the VI closed out the tournament with an emphatic 63-28 win on Sunday, November 17, 2024. The local girls led all 4 quarters, Q1: VI 18 - 10 USVI, Q2: VI 17 - 4 USVI, Q3: VI 15 - 6 USVI, and Q4: VI 13 - 8 USVI.
Awards
The Players Player in the final was Ruth Robin, who also captured awards for Best Shooter and Best Mid Court, while the Coaches Player was Tammy Joseph.
Anna Robinson was named Opposition’s Player of the Match in the final on Sunday.
Abi Edwards was adjudged the Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP).
“A lot of firsts happened this weekend, but best of all FIRST PLACE! The ladies are learning and growing so much both on and off the court, and the hard work is really starting to pay off,” Netball BVI stated on its Facebook page on November 18, 2024.
Netball BVI said it is looking forward to hosting more tournaments in the run-up to the World Cup qualifiers in 2026 “and making them even bigger and better than this one.”
The Virgin Islands has the honour of hosting the World Cup qualifiers in 2026.
The VI’s dominating performance came on the heels of winning a silver medal in St Maarten in October and getting into the top 48 of World Netball’s rankings.
