FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI— Leader of the Opposition Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), while categorically denying any involvement with the newly formed ‘Alliance’ within the House of Assembly (HoA), has said his primary political objective is to unify the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) and the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Hon Skelton was at the time speaking on The Morning Braff talk show on Tola Radio on February 10, 2025, when he made it clear that he had no connection to the Alliance, which comprises Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) of the NDP, and Deputy Speaker Hon Stacy R. Mather (AL) and Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) of the PVIM.

While the Alliance has yet to formalise itself as a political party, Hon Skelton maintained that his focus lies elsewhere, telling host Floyd P. Burnett aka 'Heritage' and the listening audience bluntly “You mentioned alliance, but I really don’t get to talk very intelligently about the alliance because I am not involved in it.”

According to the Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition Leader, “What I am involved in is a basic philosophy; To get PVIM and NDP back on one page so that we can contest the next general election; That I am committed to, and we have both NDP and some of us in PVIM. We have started having discussions, and so far, those discussions are looking okay.”

It is unclear if Hon Walwyn, who appears to be the leader of the Alliance, is part of the discussions.

Shared ideals

Hon Skelton, who played a key role in the formation of both the NDP and PVIM, posits that these parties share core values centred around integrity and national progress.

“I was involved in the formation of NDP, and I was involved in the formation of PVIM. I know what the party stands for in its basic formation. That is integrity, looking for what is good and right for our country and our people. That is what I have spent the years committed to,” he explained.

Conceding that no political solution is perfect, he expressed confidence that a reunited PVIM-NDP would provide the necessary leadership for the territory.

“What is happening right now with both parties is that there are new candidates with new vision and new commitment to this country. That’s what this country needs at this point in time—commitment to the country and its people.”

Lost in game of politics?

Addressing concerns about the two PVIM members, Hon Mather and Hon Turnbull, who have aligned with the Alliance, Skelton clarified that they had not officially resigned from PVIM, saying, “They have not submitted any resignation letters or anything of that nature.”

He quipped; however, “I think they themselves are trying to find their way in this difficult life we call politics. It’s not simple.”

Addressing the broader concerns regarding the current political climate, where elected representatives seem more focused on internal disputes rather than collective governance, the Opposition blamed the system of governance in the Virgin Islands.

“We are operating in a Westminster sort of system where we have Government and Opposition; The Government will present their views on issues, and the Opposition must show that there is also an opposite view.”

“Is it the right view? I would say not necessarily, but there are always two sides to everything.”

With this in mind, he stressed that the role of the Opposition is not merely to oppose but to highlight concerns and provide alternative perspectives.

Dropping dead weights is what the alliance appears to have done in my humble opinion. Now, it needs to focus on the people in the community who can join to form a strong party. Skelton, if you as a leader saying that your members are only trying to find their way, then you have JUST admitted how much you lack as a leader. The alliance looks to me like the members of the NDP and PVIM who were willing to work together. How come it dont include you becauae they could not have formed without discussing with both you and Marlon. So not only are you telling on yourself but you telling on Marlon too. Mitch and Mather seem to be the wiser from the PVIM side of things so I do not think it is your place to speak for them as if they are little boys. Im sure they have found the best way now with this alliance but definitely not under you. Outta place.

Everyone is quick to say they want to lead, but few are willing to do the hard work of following when it's needed most. Knowing when to follow is part of leadership competency. PIVM has come into being because certain party members refused to stand behind a leader who was duly and rightfully elected by the people. Now, what do we have? Credibility in tatters. The public sees the inconsistency—words saying one thing, actions showing another.
We all claim to be about the progress and betterment of our country, but when it comes time to make real sacrifices for the greater good, where are we? Nowhere to be found. It's all ego and posturing, with no real substance behind it. Leadership isn't about personal ambition—it's about service, unity, and putting the nation first. Until we understand that, we will continue to lose the trust of the very people we're meant to serve.

Ronnie please tell the truth and be humble! What 'philosophy' gibberish are you on about?!? You have had more than a year to organize the opposition; you have sat by warming the leader of opposition (LOP) seat doing diddly squat in that time. Marlon same thing. He wants to be 'leader' at any and all costs! Someone encouraged Fraser to cross over as to spite Lorna. Lorna only looking out for herself and her interests. I endorse these 3 guys for actually LEADING by coming together when YOU and MARLON could not find the wherwithal to organize yourselves out of a brown paper bag! So please, stop trying to do damage control because you got left in the dust.

Also, by the way how come after all this time you found the ENERGY to finally go on TOLA Radio? Must have been the Alliance that brought you to this forum after all these years! Boss you had your time no relax and let the energetic younger, organized heads to their thing now! Your time to lead has gone and now you should get the heck out of the way!

In reference to the topic issue being at hand it is not wise for a part of the B.V.I political to continue its open rebellion, or openly, even secretly opposing their other team members of the side. Such behaviors can only be accepted when their is proof of wrong things done, and prior efforts to memd fence failed.

Whether it be NDP, PVIM or some others planned unannounced political party not yet announced, the hard facts is that the people of.V.I is currently experiencing a rocking-the-boat political symptoms most because selfish ambitious government ministers both on the ruling administration side and on the opposition side.
Can the UK's government help us fix our problems? Yes it can to to a point, not not before it it has fixed more of its own problems in the UK and others of its Overseas Territory needful problems.

Allow me please to remind us that have forgotten, that lall of the past a present political leaders voted for by us have pledged allegence to the UK's Monarch, not to the people that have voted for them. This is one, if not the main reason why lack proper representation politically and democratically.

There is a saying that if the same thing is continue being done the same way the results will be the same., political practices are no different. That also means that no more district leaders should be expected and accepted as the B.V.I premier in 2027 and onwards.

The word party does includes all persons. In order to properly represent all of the peoples interest politically, territorial system is needed to be put in place and act on. Party system disunified people too much, facts. Unity is the power that wins against disunity all, politically and many other systems and ways.

    Correction please

The word part does not means all, neither does the word party.

The English word party derived from the word part. Of course nothing is wrong with part, if the part serves all of the whole.
Example. The brain is one of all the organs in a human, but it serves the whole body. Political parties were voted to power to serve all of the people, anything less falls short of adiquate governance.

    _____________________________________

    Note in bracket bellow:

Political party so-called representatives do not represent all the people of a community no where on this earth, some only do partially.
Better reformed system will foster better governance in the B.V.I for the betterment of its citizens.
