HONG KONG, China – An Asia Trade Mission, led by Virgin Islands (VI) Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Honorable Lorna Smith (Al), OBE, of the Virgin Islands has successfully completed its first leg in Hong Kong, engaging in a series of meetings and events this week.

The mission which runs from May 20-30, 2024, aims to bolster the VI's position as a leading partner for facilitating cross-border trade and business in Asia. The delegation includes representatives from ten firms that sponsored and participated in the Trade Mission, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the BVI's public and private sectors.

The meetings aimed to bolster financial and economic ties between the BVI and Hong Kong, and highlighted the mutual benefits of such partnerships.

According to Hon Smith, “Our engagements in Hong Kong, one of the BVI’s most important markets, have been highly productive and rewarding. We have held valuable discussions with a wide range of officials, regulators and industry stakeholders on the critical issues shaping the future of financial services in Hong Kong and the BVI.”

She added that there was a resurgence of interest in VI products both at the government and private sector meetings while promising to maintain a high level of engagement of partners that remains mutually beneficial.

Organized in conjunction with the BVI’s Government Representative Office in Hong Kong, 200 industry stakeholders from Hong Kong’s most prestigious offshore and onshore law firms, corporate service providers and banks, as well as numerous intermediaries gathered for a series of panels and presentations to discuss the BVI advantage.

The problem with judging whether the trip was highly productive and rewarding is that there is, and was, no returns on investment against which to mark the trip.

There were certainly the following highly rewarding benefits for some:
      First Class Flights.
      5 Star Hotels.
All food and drinks - in some of the world's most expensive restaurants and bars.
Healthy per diem cash payment on top of accommodation, food and drinks.
      Plenty of time for shopping.
Maybe a layover in Miami on the way there and back.

I suspect that everybody involved enjoyed those benefits.

Up to now we don’t know who all of the 13 members that attending are and WHY does BVI Finance have to be taking their staff who hasn’t a clue about the industry to these events. Every other month seems like they’re away on a trip for weeks at a time.

Where are the photos of members from the following IMPORTANT entities or were they not even considered to attend because it’s more of a bosom buddy trip:

        1. Registry of Corporate Affairs
        2. Financial Investigation Agency
        3. BVI International Tax Authority
        4. BVI Association of Registered Agents

Had something they tell us at a career work shop when applying for a job.

"Don't tell me that your an excellent worker, tell me your your accomplishments and I'll be convinced"

Stop telling us these trips were highly successful. Tell us what was accomplished on them exactly. Eg. We secured a deal for....
