CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- With many harsh but often fair criticisms being made over this year’s Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival, including that it has become too political, Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn has called for involvement from the public as to what festivals should be like.

Speaking at the opening of the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta on Thursday August 4, 2016, Hon Walwyn announced that very early, following this year’s festivities, a national discourse will follow regarding what the entire populace wants in upcoming festivals.

Many felt that this year was the worst in a very long time and some felt that there was too much political interference, thus crippling the celebration from slavery. Hon Walywn said he had already started speaking to persons within the Ministry of Education and Culture of his intent.

“…right after the emancipation celebrations, we must have a national conversation on what our emancipation festivities should look like to ensure that we continue to preserve the culture of the territory and we also need to ensure that the things we do are done in a very cost-effective manner.”

Bring your ideas to the table

“I want to encourage members of the public that as we start these discussions, very early after these festivities, to bring your views forward so that we can ensure that what festival looks like will be the views of all the people in the territory,” he noted.

He also took the time out to commend the organisers of the festivities and urged all to turn out to support.

Apart from the extremely late start to events, participation has been poor all around, but especially in the August Monday and East End Parades, considered the highlights of the festivals.

There have reportedly been calls for the East End and Carrot Bay festivals to be cut out to allow for all resources to be directed to one celebration in Road Town. There has, however, been early resistance to that, with Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, the Seventh District Representative Dr The Hon Kedrick D. Pickering and Junior Minister for Trade and Investment Promotion and Eighth District Representative Hon Marlon A. Penn the first to make it clear that cancelling the East End Festival will never happen.

The village entrance fees are ridiculously high and one of the main reasons why the average family (and visitors) cannot afford to participate. I really believe that cost directly impacts the booths and the overall experience for visitors. This needs to be addressed.

EE/LL parade should be marketed as a nighttime parade followed by a solid line up /celebration party in the village.

The entrance fees are in lieu of a proper fun raising structure and strategy... We will get it sort out let's come together all of us and give the support in ideas and deeds. Calypsonians, bands, Businesses, individuals. Is there an application process if one is willing to help..

      EXACTLY!

My family did not go to the village for that very reason. We simply don't have an extra $120.00 lying around JUST TO GET IN!

What happened to the "free" part of FREEDOM? No way are we ever going to pay more than $5.00 just to get in. No way! We did our own thing in the West End with friends and family. We even had our own fungi band. Good food, good friends, great story telling, just the way it was when we were kids. Back to basics.

Festival should be fun and that should only be the theme of it, FUN. Its a celebration and over the years that was forgotten. We dont need a preacher saying things like he does not want to see this and that of the body. Also older and pass leaders of it coming out with negative comments of the festival. Its a fun time for all and for a head of a church who dont even go to festival parade to be quoted in the news with such nonsense. Kids will be kids until they get older and their kids will be kids. People just want to laugh and socialize and let go of the structures of day to day and have FUN. Its not about the money as a front point of discussion but the focus should be on fun.

    That's the problem right there!
Stop trying to create a new culture and stay true to what we have! We already know what festival should look like and that's what should be preserved. If that confuses this man then he should not be Culture minister give it to someone who grew up here. But now he'll have something to prove that he can make it better...that's why he shouldn't be in that position.

We need to cancel Carrot Bay. It has no historical significance.. it was was politically created. Invest those monies we are pumping into Carrot bay to revitalize and restart Music Festival at Cane Garden Bay.. Music Festival is a better investment. Put it in the hands of tourist board. No private person..Time to have some courage and do the right thing for country

& advise mr minister.....it will be a cold day in hell before carrot bay event close down; Fahie and Myron are old classmates so don't mind the noise plus Fahie has the ability to raise the funds for that project(west side)

May I ask what historical significance the Music Festival has? Even IF Carrot Bay has no historical significance, much focus and emphasis is placed on BVI culture in their celebrations such as the plait pole, fishermen tournament and other fun races such as the jackass races, of which by the sound of your comment, you'd be a great fit for. ;)

I kind of agree, but everyone in this place is looking for a profit. Money in their pockets.. This has become the most greediest and selfish place in the world where interest of country take third place. I Think Music Festival is a good Generating source once once market properly, Other countries are fighting to add A music Festival to their Calendar to attract economic activities. But we are cancelling ours.

Now we have a reggae night. Smh the entrance fees are ridiculously high with a family of 7 how do I pay to come in. Same rides every year now like they gone crazy with 5-6 dollars per ride. Now I have to pick and chose what night to go as a family and blahhhhhh.... For the past few year our people are going Antigua and Anguilla to enjoy carnival. Same artist here on the beach for free. We really have to makes changes for future ...

It's time to get new rides for Coney Island. Every year the same old broken rides come to the BVI. This year you could tell they really needed maintenance.

Ever asked themselves why? Funny man never advertised with any of the online media sites, besides that on Island Sun, although some residences frequent his businesses. You have to connect the dots you’ll. This person/guy “may possibly” have such a “wicked and vindictive spirit” that he can’t even separate business from politics.

His buddy, The Big Money Spender- Little “Markcos” has it down-packed. He knows “politricks” are just part of the political game, but he/funnyman, on the other hand, takes everything personal. This man “indeed” is a “Funny Man,” and the only money he spends on advertising and promotions is- on himself/ALL ABOUT HIMSELF- to High Paid Consultants – WITH OUR MONEY (TAXPAYERS’ HARD EARNED MONEY). WAKE UP TO THE GAME!!!

Politicians mess up this place straight up From 2007 We've been going down.. All decisions are about personal interest... Wasteful spending without regards and rumours, appointing incapable friends and associates who are failing us. We are moving from the most prosperous island in the Caribbean to the only one with no growth in the last 8 yrs.

The only thing growing besides politicians getting rich, is our country's debt; It's racking up faster than we can blink.

We need a regional and international beach event either at Beef Island or Cane Garden Bay. Even if we have to have a referendum a national vote as to which one to Cancel and as to which beach is best for this international event. We got some of the best Swimming waters in the world, let's bring the world to us to experience waters like they never see before...

There even has been a low turn out of people from the USVI the departure taxes are too high. DR. SMITH and his collegues need to offer a lower dep tax on the BIG DAYS especially the horse race. Imagine coming over with a family of 5 for horse race that $100 in BVI departure taxes plus a $250 for the ferry $60 to get on the track. I believe the ferries and GOV need to work on something. THIS WHOLE THING IS GETTING TO POLITICAL
