ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The decision by Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn to strike Leader of the Opposition Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) from the programme for the Opening of Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival at the last minute on July 25, 2016 has been met with shock and disgust by many on Facebook.

Hon Fraser had brought the matter to light on his Facebook wall last evening, stating that he was invited to speak at the Opening Ceremony in his capacity of Leader of the Opposition by Director of Culture, Luce Hodge-Smith, however, while on his way to the event he was contacted by the Director of Culture who allegedly said “don't bother to come because the Minister don't want me on his programme…”

Reports have since been circulating in the media that Hon Walwyn allegedly said the Director of Culture had erred in having Hon Fraser’s name on the programme in the first place and that the Opposition Leader never speaks at the Opening of Festival.

Among those reacting to the post made by Hon Fraser was Felecia L. Todman, who said: "United we stand. Divided????? You know the rest. This is what you all are showing the children of the VI how to behave???????"

Michael Chinnery said: “This guy need to be stopped,” to which Hon Fraser replied, “It's up to all well meaning Virgin Islanders and Belongers who vote, to send the Premier the message, that what he has in place is unlike Virgin Islands Culture."

Hon Walwyn a Donald Trump?

Christine Honore Forbes wrote: “Again WOW! I would expect that from Donald Trump not from the loving people in the Tortola. Please! This island is too small to harbour that type of attitude and it is also disrespectful to ask someone not to attend that way, regardless of their statue. Where is the common courtesy?”

Hon Fraser replied that Donald J. Trump happens to be light years ahead of Hon Walwyn, “because Trump says America first, means he will not have denied an American. If this guy said Virgin Islanders first I would have been able to attend and deliver my Remarks because I am a Virgin Islander. What are we coming to? Or better yet, what have we become?”

Dennis 'Ras Bello' Alister wrote: “What is this man problem dread? Myron is a sick dude and needs help. I hope the people is taking notes of what's been going on. Time for them to get out cause the future ain't looking good with them in government at all. Myron you're a sick dude! More fire.”

Clairespiceoflife Mills remarked: “So with that kind of situation what can of Message are we sending out there like really. Hon Fraser that is a lot of disrespect to you and your ppl. You need to address that situation you are not a child, you are a big respectable man…”

Irresponsible, thoughtless behaviour

Christine Glover-Walton added that it is frightening that what the festival is supposed to commemorate seems to have been lost.

“On August 1st, 1834, Slavery was abolished throughout the British realm. Just as Passover is a commemoration of the exodus of the Hebrews from bonds of slavery in the land of Egypt, August (1st) should be treated with dignity and thoughtfulness. It is said that he/they that do not remember his/their history is/are bound to repeat the errors of the past. Shame, too many people here do not even know or care to know their own history. What passes for culture, for the most part, is nothing more than a new, more insidious form of slavery (self-imposed).

“Shameful about the indignity and noise that characterise the Festival!! Too bad that modern-day slaves do not even recognise that all the noise makers for which they willingly pay $$$ are made and sold by a class of persons who do not and will not let these trinkets in their homes or communities, yet we who so willingly purchase these under the guise of modernity/development are destroying ourselves. It is no secret that excessive, loud amplified noise cause hearing problems; especially to children! We need Human Revolution. Irresponsible, thoughtless behaviour should absolutely not be tolerated!!”

No apologies for Hon Fraser?

Although statements have reportedly been made to the media by Hon Walwyn and Chairperson of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) Kishma A. Baronville who have both said it was an error to have Hon Fraser on the programme, The Opposition Leader has confirmed to this news site that no one has contacted him to clarify the issue or make any apology.

“No one from the Festival Committee, including the Minister, has reached out to me as yet,” Hon Fraser told Virgin Islands News Online.

As to reports that Hon Walwyn told the media that the Leader of the Opposition has never spoken at the opening of VI Festival, Hon Fraser said he understands this to be false.

“You can confirm this with others who should know, such as the former minister (Hon Andrew A. Fahie) to see if he had Dr Smith appear, and the former Leader of the Opposition to see if he was there during the 4 years he served.”

Hon Fahie had not responded to our queries before publication time.

“In any regard, I was legitimately invited. I was already on the programme and ready to appear. The matter was handled in poor taste, and to the extent he noted that the Leader of the Opposition should not be speaking, he (Hon Walwyn) is the one politicising it, not me,” Hon Fraser stated.

The news site contacted the VIF&FC Chairperson Ms Baronville, who promised to send us a statement but had not done so up to the time of publication.

And why is this so highlighted ? If a mistake was made , it should be corrected . I have no problem who speak, but ; was it that important, or did it drop the level of gun crime . We all need to grow up and leave well alone. Move on people . teach the children to move on.

I too am disgusted by the small, petty behavior demonstrated by Hon. Walwyn. He just lost my vote.

If my memory serves me right, I believed that Hon. R. T. O'Neal while in the Opposition spoke at Festival Opening many years ago. So it is not uncommon for the opposition to speak at the festival. The festival does not belong to Minister Walwyn, it belong to all of us. Remember the Opposition Leader also represent ppl as well So this is not the Myron Walwyn Show, its our festival and everyone should be able to take part in it.

While I have never been a Fraser fan, what went down last night was in extremely poor taste. Here we are, supposedly celebrating our freedom from slavery and it appears as if we are in political bondage. To have been taken off the programme and at short notice, so unceremoniously, is a resounding slap in the Opposition Leader's face. That is not how we as a people behaved. No decorum!

While education is supposed to be the elixir that helps to free our minds, I will say this much: 'You can take Salem out the country, but you can't take the country out of Salem.'

I shudder to think what will become of us as a people if this tasteless, ungentlemanly type of behavior is allowed to continue.

With this type of ego and arrogrance, is the MEC Premier material? Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Myron up to his usual politicks!!!!! WAKE UP BVI, WAKE UP!!!
Politricks is the word "politics" altered to convey the empty-campaign promises often experienced after politicians get elected.
    "Read my lips...No new taxes"

"I did not have sex with that woman...Ms. Lewinsky"

Politricks sums up the vast difference of how politicians seem when they campaign versus when they reign.

Myron Walwyn is a hate monger. We are supposed to be celebrating brotherly love, our emancipation, Myron behavior does not reflect that. The NDP mantra is, It is our way, or the highway. We are still in slavery with this Dictatorial NDP government. Brothers and Sisters we are not free. NDP do what they want, and how they want. We the people have no say in how our country is governed. They emptied our Treasury, they have destroyed our Culture with their strong arm tactics. Fungi Fest dead, Music Fest dead, our Emancipation Festival dead. What is supposed to be a loving, inclusive time, Myron Walwyn is hell bent on excluding people who he does not like. That means it is all about Myron Walwyn, and not about the People. This might very well be our last Festival, (which is nothing like we used to know it), if we don't get rid of NDP and take our country back.
