ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Opposition Legislator Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (R6) has called for the resignation of Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to resign as Minister of Finance.

Hon Walwyn was speaking during the continuation of the Seventeenth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on Friday, August 16, 2024 where supplementary estimates were brought before the HoA by Premier Wheatley.

$13M variant in new salary structure- Premier Wheatley

Premier Wheatley told the HoA an important aspect of the supplementary appropriation is to rectify discrepancies in the budget since the passage of the Appropriation Act in 2023.

The HoA approved 11.7 million dollars for the new salary structure however an analysis by the Ministry of Finance in April 2024, of the impact of the compensation review on the 2024 budget allocations for personal emoluments revealed the discrepancy.

“The purpose of the analysis was to analyze actual expenditure for personal emoluments of existing public officers up to the 15th April, 2024, to extrapolate the anticipated spending to year end,” Premier Wheatley explained.

It was revealed following the analysis there was a “significant variance” between funding required for personal emoluments for current officer and the figure appropriated in the budget

As of April 15, 2024, the funding required amounted to twenty-five million, fifty-six thousand, five hundred and eighteen dollars, while the figure appropriated in the budget was 11.7 million dollars.

Such a mistake calls for resignation as Minister for Finance- Hon Myron V. Walwyn

Hon Walwyn said being the Minister of Finance is a “heavy responsibility” adding that Premier Wheatley was trusted with the finances of the country and went off on a “frolic of his own”.

“What happens in Caribbean countries and even developed countries in the world, when a Minister of Finance or any minister makes what Ralph Gonsalves would have called a 'monumental blunder' of this type of proportion, the proper thing for that person to do is resign from their post as Minister of Finance and I’m calling on the Premier to do the honourable thing…you have shown to this country, is that you’re not capable of being the Minister of Finance,” Hon Walwyn said.

The discrepancy is really $20M- Hon Myron V. Walwyn

Hon Walwyn also questioned the validity of the discrepancy being only thirteen million dollars.

“The truth really is, it’s about 20 million dollars…how can you get that wrong?” Hon Walwyn said.

He advised that someone more “capable” should be made to become Minister of Finance.

“This finance thing is more than you, resign from the post, you wouldn’t lose your government…hand the portfolio over to somebody in your government who is far more capable than you are,” Hon Walwyn reiterated.

He also said a mistake like this is one the “public should not forgive”.

All of y'all need to resign

The country got hot with a tropical Storm and some areas having a hard time to recover but we got money through at everything else instead of improving and future proofing the country. Sick of this

The two jobs should be completely separate anyway. Having the Premiership and MOF as one person is a monumental blunder. If you think that either of these roles can be fulfilled on a part-time basis, you are not serious about the future of this territory.

I saw island man Myron acting in the house. What he really wanted to say is that he wants his NDP chairman Smurf (Marlon) to resign as he wants that spot, and he wants Bob the Builder Ronnie to resign as Leader of the Opposition because he wants that spot. (he has no support in the opposition to be leader they say it behind his back all the time)
Stop using the Premier for your weak disgusting nasty politically motivated ambitious IT WILL NOT WORK this is 2024. Bossie have you leant anything from the 2019 elections when we got rid of you? Relax Walwyn your honey moon is fast coming to an END!

You will never see a white man pulling down another white man. Ball head you are not trying to build this country for future generations. Stop your divisive rhetoric.
