Hon Walwyn begs support for campaign promise @ job fair
And as election approaches, Hon Walwyn has been begging the support of businesses to help realise his promise to the many disheartened young people especially who had voted for him with the hope that they would be given employment.
"I ask that you give them a fair chance, mentor them and provide them the guidance that someone provided many of us when we first got the opportunity to earn a living," Hon Walwyn urged participants of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Youth Apprentices Job Fair exhibition, which opened on Monday March 30, 2015 at Maria’s by the Sea.
It was claimed at the opening ceremony that some 108 youths were in the process of being recruited to 'get their feet in the doors' of businesses in the private sector of the Virgin Islands (VI).
"The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they - at some distant point in the future - will take over the reins. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself nicely... because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties," the Education Minister also said.
Hon Walwyn added that studies show that young persons with a sense of purpose, preparedness and access to opportunities for both further education and work, are less likely to engage in behaviour that can have adverse effects on their future prospects as well as the communities in which they live.
"So in short ladies and gentlemen, we have no choice, but to provide opportunities for our youth to develop in order for the country that we love remain a vibrant place to live, work and do business," he said.
No Facebook & texting at the workplace
The initial figure of targeted youths went up by 20 at the opening after Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith made an on-the-spot decision to add funding to accommodate that additional number of persons.
Premier Smith lauded the programme as being yet another first for the territory.
One of the challenges Premier Smith said was affecting youths seeking employment is that most are turned down for the lack of experience but he asked the question as to how would they gain experience of not having a chance to work.
In give his advice to the youths present, he cautioned that they need to leave the texting, Facebooking and other social media distractions, including reading news, for when they are off the job.
Premier Smith also advised of the need to commit to the extent that employees go into work early and stay late.
