ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - ‎After campaigning on the promise that he was going to get jobs for youth of the Virgin Islands and winning the support of the youth population at the 2011 general elections, Minister for Education and Culture Myron V. Walwyn has failed to deliver on his major platform as unemployment among youth is up in the territory.

And as election approaches, Hon Walwyn has been begging the support of businesses to help realise his promise to the many disheartened young people especially who had voted for him with the hope that they would be given employment.

"I ask that you give them a fair chance, mentor them and provide them the guidance that someone provided many of us when we first got the opportunity to earn a living," Hon Walwyn urged participants of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Youth Apprentices Job Fair exhibition, which opened on Monday March 30, 2015 at Maria’s by the Sea.

It was claimed at the opening ceremony that some 108 youths were in the process of being recruited to 'get their feet in the doors' of businesses in the private sector of the Virgin Islands (VI).

"The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they - at some distant point in the future - will take over the reins. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself nicely... because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties," the Education Minister also said.

Hon Walwyn added that studies show that young persons with a sense of purpose, preparedness and access to opportunities for both further education and work, are less likely to engage in behaviour that can have adverse effects on their future prospects as well as the communities in which they live.

"So in short ladies and gentlemen, we have no choice, but to provide opportunities for our youth to develop in order for the country that we love remain a vibrant place to live, work and do business," he said.

No Facebook & texting at the workplace

The initial figure of targeted youths went up by 20 at the opening after Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith made an on-the-spot decision to add funding to accommodate that additional number of persons.

Premier Smith lauded the programme as being yet another first for the territory.

One of the challenges Premier Smith said was affecting youths seeking employment is that most are turned down for the lack of experience but he asked the question as to how would they gain experience of not having a chance to work.

In give his advice to the youths present, he cautioned that they need to leave the texting, Facebooking and other social media distractions, including reading news, for when they are off the job.

Premier Smith also advised of the need to commit to the extent that employees go into work early ‎and stay late.

the young people of the BVI have figured out by now after three long years that the NDP has nothing to offer this country so they come up with all sorts of distractions and trying to confuse the youths now with another eletion gimmick after having a ton of job fairs. Ask the NDP why after almost 4 years they have NOT DONE AH THING for country and ask them why the young people want nothing to do with them???

Keep saying that! Keep saying NDP did nothing for 3 years. I love it, keep saying it! Because the more you say it, the more the people will realize different. See you at the pier park 29 April to witness history. VIP couldn't get a welcome center, we got the whole hog! Can you feel it?

Someone need to tell Myron that the young people are not fools and they are not to be used and exploited. I will rather play basketball than be lied to about a job that does not exist…

Typical NDP always begging for something; if it’s not to support some backwards policy, it’s they begging for criminals in the court system…others begging for votes when they did nothing !!

What I don't understand is that we was told that we would be interviewed by a number of companies. HOWEVER only a hand full showed up & those companies that interview me then stated that they will contact for an in office interview WHERE we was NEVER told about this. One of the trust companies even told me that the position available is temporary and it is only for 3 months while MYRON giving us the impression like it lasting for 6 months. I WENT TO ONE OF THEM DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE for help with finding a job I called her THREE TIMES and every time she told me to meet her at her office for this specific time and all Three times SHE NEVER SHOWS UP.

WE YOUNG PEOPLE OUT HERE STRUGGLING to find a job. IT IS VERY HARD AND DEPRESSING. THEM don't give a cap about us all them concern about is wanting us VOTE for them coming around giving us 50 dollars and thing to vote for them ... SICK OF THEM ALL

& when we do get a job they ain't paying us or giving us monthsss to wait for pay
