Hon Skelton questions legitimacy of Hon Walwyn’s ‘power grab’ appointment

- said he never received a revocation letter as Opposition Leader; Alliance members have not resigned from their respective parties

FISH BAY, Tortola, VI— Former Opposition Leader Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), who in confirming the reunification of the National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8), has questioned the validity of the appointment of Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) as Opposition Leader.

Further, Hon Skelton has suggested that not everyone in the ‘Alliance’ agreed with Hon Walwyn stripping Hon Skelton of the leadership of the Opposition.

Hon Skelton was at the time speaking alongside Hon Penn during an interview on The Big Show with host Cathy O. Richards on March 26, 2025.

At the heart of the controversy–the two contends—lies the alliance of three Opposition members, a union that has raised more questions than answers, namely that of newly appointed Leader of the Opposition Hon Walwyn, himself still a formal member of the NDP, leading the trio that includes PVIM member Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and political newcomer, Deputy Speaker Hon Stacy R. Mather (AL).

Hon Walwyn's Legitimacy?

Hon Skelton questioned the legitimacy of the newly minted Opposition Leader, since according to the ousted Leader of the Opposition, he is yet to receive a formal revocation letter, as should be the case.

The revocation of Hon Skelton as Opposition Leader by the Governor was published in the official gazette on March 24, 2025; however.

According to the instrument of revocation, Hon Skelton was appointed Leader of the Opposition on April 27, 2023, “AND WHEREAS under section 70(3) of the said Constitution, if at any time between the polling in a general election and the next following dissolution of the House of Assembly the Governor is satisfied that, if the office of the Leader of the Opposition were then vacant, he would appoint to that office a person other than the person then holding that office, the Governor shall revoke the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition;

“NOW THEREFORE, by virtue of the said section 70(3) of the Constitution and all other powers thereunto me enabling, I, DANIEL PRUCE, Governor of the Virgin Islands, DO by this instrument under the public seal revoke your appointment as the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands with effect from the 24th day of March, 2025.”

The question remains whether the Leader of the Opposition seat was vacant when the alliance members have not resigned from their respective parties.

This was also confirmed by Hon Penn.

“I have never received a revocation letter… I checked my email; I even checked my junk mail,” in reference to his party colleague. and newly minted Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, Hon Walwyn.

Red flags

Meanwhile, Hon Penn said the NDP is focused on the reunification of the organisation,” recounting that as late as the Thursday before the leadership of the Opposition transition, discussions were ongoing about working, “....collaboratively from that perspective.”

He disclosed, however, that mere hours later, a petition had been dispatched to the Governor, effectively deposing Hon Skelton in favour of Hon Walwyn as Opposition Leader.

Hon Skelton, clearly stung by the move, laid bare the machinations at play, stating bluntly that “I think this was in the works about two months ago.”

Referencing a telephone engagement with a member not inclined to see a change in the leadership of the present Opposition in the House of Assembly (HoA), “…immediately sent a red flag to me, that something is going on.”

And the plot thickens! The “Alliance” has dug in, the NDP is attempting to rise from the ashes, the VIP must be licking their chops as an election victory is just about guaranteed! Time will tell!

A VIP victory is far from Guaranteed. They have some very weak people on their team. I see potentially 3 of them losing, including the Premier. D7 people will be a special kind of stupid if they elect him for a 3rd time to neglect them. What I do see is a repeat of last election and possibly even more confusion.

That’s the Governors office issue. He should have informed Skelton and Skelton should know this. Any of the 13 or any combination of the 13 can request the governor revoke an appointment. It’s up to the governor to inform abolish t the revocation

One Opposition in tbe HOA. Political party affiliation is a whole other matter, which should not be played out in our HOA.

What's sad is that Walwyn would've sabotaged our financial services over missed protocol but didn't care about protocol in this instance, which isn't anywhere nearly as important. So it's all bout ego and power folks, your needs have nothing to do with it.

I hold no brief for Mr. Walwyn, but 1) that is the Governor's responsibility and, 2) it was published in the Official Gazette.

One day we will regret all the excuses we make for bad behavior. But the governor himself should be more clear on the rules, if he cared. The party leaders determine the head of the opposition so if Myron is now party leader then tell us which party he leads and have his team declare. What we were told is that they formed a rebel alliance outside of the party leaders. Dotting the I's and crossing the t's is what Myron and Mitch were furious about before the Asia trip. The opposition seems to be in the same spot they were in before.

What does being a member of a party have to do with being an elected member of the HOA? Isnt it that you have the government on one side, and the opposition on the other? Isnt it also that the majority members in the opposition then makes a recommendation to the Governor, to appoint someone from the opposition, to be the leader, according to the constitution?

If it is true that Hon. Skelton was not duly notified of the revocation of his appointment, then that should not have been, in my humble opinion. I will reserve judgment on that however.

This man always with some excuse. In 2018 when he lost the leadership contest he had a story. Now he lost the leader of the opposition he got another story. The governor must be a moo moo to swear in Myron and he didn’t have the majority support. Somebody please tell this entitled, tired, lazy man to please retire.

The current crop of politicians demonstrate a state of self-interest, selfishness, lessness, not giving a rat’s ass about the people. The political process is a’ Poppy’ show, a jokey poppy show. It is a poor comedy show. It is an embarrassment. Everybody wants power but so less can’t even spell power. What ah state of lessness. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark/ Road Town but Denmark is too busy protecting Greenland from Trump who is ‘ phyassing’ , needing a cutass. The BVI has a myriad of problems and needs and needs serious people. The current unserious people makes one want to puke with the lessness.. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired of the lessness. I look right Lessness,; left, Lessness; center, lessness; up, Lessness; down, Lessness. Way Rocky, Falco, Strawn, Mako, Melee, etc? Put pen to paper and sing a calypsoic medley. Lesness, oh Lessness…

All I can say is how these young people behaving nowadays, they probably would have told H.L. Stoutt, T. B. Lettsome and Prince Stoutt to go and sit down. They don't have degrees. For in those days, there were many with degrees but love for country and a strong work ethic towards lifting this Territory now and in the future, is hard to come by.

You see, it isn't who can speak the best. It isn't who you can meet on the street, individually, and ask for something and get it. All of us pay taxes and everybody should have the opportunity to receive assistance in the same way if and when needed. The new fangled politicians do personal favours so that they can say election time, don't forget I helped you out. That is certainly against the election rules, especially since it wasn't their money, but all of our tax money they are giving out for the most part.

When you can put country first, that impresses me. When you hold a Ministry and you work hard to push the agendas of that Ministry, that impresses me. The Opposition has no resources to do much of anything. They are to let us know what is going on in the HOA. Our country is so tiny that it happens 2:00 o'clock and we know by 2:15. So all this who is working and who isn't is pure foolishness when you are on the Opposition. You can oppose until thy Kingdom come and the Government's will will still be done because they have the majority and one track minds, together in everything, good or bad.

Ronnie please get out of our government and go run your multimillion dollar companies (cause I counting the one in Guyana too!).You ain’t been in our social bracket for years. YOU are out of touch. Someone that lives the way you do, and banks (VP)where you do can’t have our best interests at heart. You fly first or business class everywhere you go. You don’t have to decide if to pay light bill or buy food. In fact YOU don’t even know what the prices in the Supermarket look like cause YOU don’t have to go there, someone does it for you. So here you are another wash up, over privileged politician who donates a few dollars here and there, just enough to get your name on a plaque and stay relevant. We already have to pay you until you die, what more do you want Mr. Millionaire.
