Hon. Pickering acknowledges VI has “houses of ill repute”
“This is a Godly nation my friend. It’s a spiritual problem we are dealing with. We live as a Godly nation, but we have houses of ill repute...We have to come to a point and decide if we are going to legalise gambling because all of us know gambling going on. All of us know prostitution going on, but we want to bury our heads in the sand like ostriches. I am on the firing line because I am an elected official, but we as a people have to decide what we want for our country,” the outspoken Minister stated at a community meeting on January 19, 2012 at the East End End/Long Look Community Centre.
He was at the time responding to a question by a resident of whether or not his Government was willing to make the tough decisions for the betterment of the Virgin Islands.
Although the Minister divulged that he has no problem with making the tough decisions, he is quite aware as an individual what he can and cannot do to effect change.
“As a Minister I cannot inflict my views on others. But the facts are the facts. We are a godly nation, it was built on godly principles. If we start forgetting God we will pay the price,” he charged.
Interestingly, Hon. Pickering’s view on the subject was well received by the large crowd that turned out for the meeting.
