ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- On International Women’s Day being observed today, March 8, 2022, persons in the Virgin Islands (VI) have been challenged on the women, who in our early years, molded the persons and characters that we have become.

This challenge has been made by Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Carvin Malone (AL).

‘Unsung heroes’

According to Hon Malone, the women he is reflecting on today were not only homemakers but were business leaders in very subtle and effective ways.

“For me, Carvin Malone of Fat Hogs Bay and Huntums Ghut, I speak of: Ruth Malone (d), Flossie Penn (d), Helen Frett (d), Alexandrina Maduro (d), Hilda "Baby" Frett (d), Evelyn Rabsatt (d), Millicent Mercer (d), Christalia "Miss Chrisy" Hodge (d), Althea Scatliffe (d), Sarah Barzey (d), Louise Malone (d), Una Douglas (d) and many others. These are my UNSUNG HEROES,” Hon Malone highlighted in a statement today.

Theme

According to Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), the theme for this year’s observance of International Women’s Day (IWD) is ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’.

“It is accepted throughout the world that the year 2022 is pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change, and environmental and disaster risk reduction, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the twenty-first century. Without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remains beyond our reach.”

Hon Fahie added that this year’s IWD observance is in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response, and to honour their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.

#Breakthe Bias

The Premier also highlighted that this year’s campaign is represented by #BreaktheBias hashtag and"calls on people to work towards a world that is equitable, inclusive and free from bias and discrimination so the playing field is levelled for women moving forward.

Let us remember one unsung hero on the BVI, Ms Wilamina Alimina George of Salt Island. She was instrumental in guiding the new formed BVI Legco when it was originally founded. Its sad BVi history books make little mention of her.
