Hon Maduro-Caines declines debate in D6
Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines—the current NDP District Six Representative—has declined to participate in a debate organised by a group of residents in District Six, even as competing candidate, Mr John M. Samuel of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has confirmed his participation.
Too busy to debate - Maduro-Caines
According to sources, letters were being prepared and phone calls made to each of the two candidates when Mr Samuel agreed to the debate.
However, sources told our news desk that in a phone call to Hon Maduro-Caines from two committee members, she responded, “I am too busy campaigning and don’t have time to debate.”
Our news centre reached out today, Sunday, January 13, 2019, to Hon. Maduro-Caines, however, she did not immediately respond.
It is still unclear, the reason why Hon Madruo-Caines will not participate in the debate against VIP candidate Mr Samuel, but persons familiar with the issue will wait to see whether NDP leader Mr Walwyn will push his candidate to enter.
VIP took Virgin Gorda
The first debate for the political season was held on January 9, 2019, on Virgin Gorda.
It was between three candidates, the current 9th District Representative, Dr the Honourable Hubert R. O’Neal of the ruling NDP 1, Jose C. B. de Castro representing the breakaway group, Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM-NDP2) and Vincent O. Wheatley representing VIP.
After the debate, 70 per cent of residents on social media listening and watching said that Mr Wheatley won hands down.
Coming in second with 20 per cent was PVIM’s Mr de Castro and third with 10 per cent of the votes, incumbent Hon O’Neal.

Lets get Andrew, Fraser, Ronnie and Myron on the stage and settle this once and for all. No pre-released questions no scripted answered. What will your leader do when he gets that call at 3am? Let's Go!
Those hired to come beg us for votes with these white envelopes, we taking all the money coming our way, but guess what? we still ain't voting for her!!!!
What do you call busy campaigning? Visiting peoples homes and sitting and gossiping about John along with being childish on Facebook.
You need to grow up and you need to stop.
Busy
We she can't we are going to vote a$$ out do nothing for the sixth. Lavida can't save you. Talk for yourself.not others talk for you.
No respect. Why harrass the lady on a Sunday when she already declined. The minister of the 1st district need to stop with this strategy trying to win districts.
Let them all go out and campaign and stop trying to take people ideas. Go have your VIP rally and let us hear them all speak for themselves.
We want a Chairman debate first. Leave the districts alone.
I advise not to take us for granted.
