ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has taken over the chairmanship of the Caribbean Meteorological Council (CMC).

Chairmanship was handed over to the Virgin Islands during the ongoing 67th Session of the Caribbean Meteorological Council (CMC67) which is being held in the VI at Maria's by the Sea Hotel from November 18 to 22, 2024.

During the opening ceremony of the CMC67 on Thursday, November 21, 2024, Hon Rymer gave remarks as incoming Chair where he said meteorological services are at the heart of disaster risk reduction, sustainable development and economic stability.

“The critical functions of our national meteorological and hydrological services including early warnings, impact-based forecasting and support for strategic decision making are essential for protecting life and property, enhancing aviation and marine safety, and supporting key economic sectors such as tourism, agriculture and fisheries.”

National Met Service for VI- Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer continued that the economy of the VI is “deeply intertwined with weather and climate conditions”, and so this is why steps are being taken to establish a National Meteorological Service.

This, according to Hon Rymer, will serve as a cornerstone for building a resilient and sustainable Territory.

“This initiative aligns with our National Sustainable Development Plan and will enhance our ability to respond to severe weather events, mitigate disaster risk and contribute to regional and international meteorological efforts,” he added.

CMO a special CARICOM agency

The Caribbean Meteorological Organisation (CMO) is a specialised agency of the Caribbean Community that coordinates the joint scientific and technical activities in weather, climate and water-related sciences in sixteen English-speaking Caribbean countries including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands.

The council has been focusing on enhancing the capabilities of CMO Member States to provide authoritative and user-friendly information and services while ensuring a sustainable observation network to support these services.

How many more pointless government jobs / departments are going to be created with the relevant information already at our fingertips on the internet . This surely is just another attempt to create titles , salaries & pensions for friends and family suckling at the tax payers expense on government cash. These wasted funds are already urgently required for infrastructure projects, but will be gifted to individuals with no result based oversight , just another costly no doubt rented office space and government cars sitting for the most part of the day at their home or bar car parks , personal producing unnecessary government trash.

He's stretching himself and his staff even more so we should expect more incompetence. Ask Karl about the upset residents of District 1 with the mess of traffic again this morning! Please VIP...please please please...exit quickly. We cannot take this incompetence anymore!!!!

Although the national weather service in San Juan does not forecast for our jurisdiction, I obtain my weather info for the Virgin Islands from them and it is very accurate.
I will continue to do so
