ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism, Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) has called on the people of the Virgin Islands (VI), to participate in Emancipation celebrations as a way to keep the true meaning of emancipation alive.

Onus is on us to preserve our culture- Hon Hodge-Smith

Hon Hodge-Smith who was speaking during the first day of the 70th Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival Food Fair on Friday, August 2, 2024, said, “We must not ever forget our culture, we must never forget our history and it is so important for us to continuously pass it on and in order for us to pass it on we have to participate.”

She said participation has become a challenge as “we don’t get enough participants in our traditional way of life, in our culture, our heritage”.

Hon Hodge-Smith said it is only through participation, the culture and traditions of the VI can be passed onto future generations so they understand who they are as a people.

“The onus is on all of us, whether we’re directly involved or indirectly involved, it is our responsibility to teach the younger ones what their history and culture is. No matter what the circumstances, no matter what the situation, we always have to participate,” she urged.

Rich culture and traditions in the VI- Hon Hodge-Smith

The Junior Culture and Tourism Minister said the VI has a rich cultural and traditional history which makes the emancipation celebrations significant.

“Yesterday, we celebrated Emancipation Day which signified 190 years since we have been celebrating our freedom, our emancipation from slavery. So it’s very important for us to recognise that this is not just a carnival…it’s not a j’ourvert for us it’s a Rise and Shine. Rise and Shine because when the news came out that we were freed, our forefathers were freed, they jumped to the streets in whatever they had on,” Hon Hodge-Smith explained.

Next you will hear people thanking God when God ain’t had a thing to do with giving them the opportunity to sing secular music, making money off of selling rum, shots, Jell-O shots all while encouraging and laughing at drunken and worthless behaviour then saying it’s culture.

Serving/worshipping culture, money, and people then mixing God in the devil’s work seem to be prevalent in society.

      The devil got you confuse.

Here we have a young lady pleading for and encouraging awareness and participation in thee most important stage of growth and development in the region and of a people and all this contributer can talk about is fingernails. What a sad and narrow and low-level mentality. Disrespectful and most frightening that anyone benefiting from the acts 1834 can remain in such a deep state of mental slavery.
      Help us Lord.

That’s like saying stop the violence yet bringing in acts to perform lyrics that promote violence.

95% of this Music Fest they call a Festival Village has nothing to do with the culture of the BVI.

In the 21st Century we should not be still celebrating 1834 this is retarded. We need to be celebrating freedom from colonialism. There is nothing to celebrate with the COI recomendations that are putting us back in the 1800s. When will BVI wake up. Get up and stand up I'll be right there with you but this outdated retarded overpriced music festival does not cut it for me thank you.

Participate in Rajah Rajah and Dexta Daps and Shensea? A bunch of Jamaican artists that have nothing to do with the culture of our Virgin Islands or this region. You spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on these artists but barely give Carrot Bay $35k! All but got rid of East End Festival but now talking about participating in cultural events? You are confused Luz! Government is not prioritizing culture in our festival but you expect citizens to? Foolishness

Every year they come with the same hogwash and keep repeating the same cycle.

That hit and run song people going moomooish over… it’s the same people that would be crying over someone that hit and run on them.

This world, social media, etc got a lot of people sitting on their brain.

How some of them look in those village photos acting like these people on stage are their god idolizing them especially the so-called biggest local artist/band ….you’d think these people are their Saviour.

They already calling out for Vybz Kartel to come here like he’s the second coming of Christ…on top of that the man has health challenges.

      Idolatry is a sin.

So many people are lost and not even trying to find their way.

Absolutely we go out when we only had local and regional performers. Village ended at 2am and we would go other places to enjoy we self. Cost of Festival was way down. Our people came home to spend time with family and friends and eat good food. Village was freeeeeee! Our festival is about our culture not about making money nor no set of big named and very expensive artists. Burning flames, WCK, Triple K, Sugar Band, Jam Band, one International reggae night and one Latin night and we good. This is not a competition against other places. This is us celebrating us!

You sound stupid and clueless! The hatred is VI people against their own culture! That’s the only hatred. Santos love up their country and culture and don’t change for a soul! Jamaicans proud of their jerk and escovitchand Reggae and don’t change for a soul. Trini don’t allow no other music but their own during their Carnivals and fly their flags proudly anywhere they are. But VI hate itself and allow these same other cultures to tell we what our festival must be. Instead of VI standing on business! We soft! Allowing foreign or half breed social media bullies to influence the committee and the Premier. That’s the hatred!

The new generation was taught very little bit about their culture, and this is the evidence. Wake up and smell the bush tea,it’s the 21 century and most knows nothing about the slave trade influence on their culture. A messed up generation who is not analyzing their birth right. Change all the activities and teach the young, what it means to gun down each other in the streets.let them know it’s not about power it’s a weakness that weaponized against the young.when it over the expatriates and their children are the one who will become leaders out here. Show them how to solve problems, how to live and support each other teach them over and over again.

If you need participation ban those outfits, yes the ones that show all those big out of shape bottoms and slack boobs fallout those skimpy outfits, that is not culture it’s degrading our women mentality. Start thinking how socially our young youth think it’s okay for them to bend over ,hands on the ground legs wide open is an example to celebrate freedom,it not and you need to do get your actions together with gender affairs and ban this type of reveling.
