ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism, Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) rated 2024 as a success in her contributions to the budget debate during the Continuation of the Twenty-First Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on December 18, 2024.

Reflecting on 2024, Hon Hodge-Smith declared the year “a very successful” one despite global and local challenges, affirming, “Our economy continues to be stable through the two economic pillars of the financial services sector and tourism.”

The Minister reminded members of the HoA that the sector has seen significant growth, particularly in air access, with the return of LIAT, expanded services by Caribbean Airlines, and increased flights by Winair.

“This is the season when private jets will soon be parked up,” said Hon Hodge-Smith, underscoring the sector’s vitality, particularly during peak tourist periods.

Tourism Summit scheduled for January 2025

Looking ahead, the Minister also revealed plans to kick off the New Year with a Tourism Summit on January 16 and 17, 2025.

This event will convene industry stakeholders to chart a path forward, in tandem with efforts focused on sustainable tourism that aligns with the National Sustainable Development Plan’s cultural and environmental objectives.

Public-Private Partnership

Recognising aesthetics and functional challenges in the capital city Road Town, Hon Hodge-Smith announced plans under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), to create green spaces, enhance pedestrian walkways, and improve the town’s overall appeal.

“The idea is to have a capital that all of us can be very pleased with, and reflects who we are as Virgin Islanders,” she added.

Culture she said will also take center stage in 2025, as efforts to preserve heritage, promote cultural education, and develop creative industries continue.

According to Hon Hodge-Smith, these initiatives aim to foster national unity and provide eco-friendly, culturally enriching experiences for visitors and residents alike.

Millions to benefit 13 at a time while the masses of the 30,000 suffer. So if I were you yea I too would say the year was a success

Her boss coached her to say that.Successful for her because she doesn’t have to go to bed and wake up thinking and wondering how to pay your bills and what you are going to feed your children for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Remember now, the parents have to provide school lunch for their children due to a lack of a school lunch program in the schools. Honestly, if I had the recourses, I would start a school lunch program in my District. the District that the Deputy Premier lives.
