Hon Fraser throws hat into ring for VIP Chairman
Fraser said that he supported O’Neal’s call for a special meeting of the party and said he believes it is good for the party going forward. He said that it is in the Territory’s best interest that the meeting and the elections are held within the party.
In a brief statement dated March 26, 2014, O’Neal said, “In exercise of the powers of Chairman under the Virgin Islands Party Constitution I have on Thursday March 27th written the Secretary of the Party as is required directing that it is my express desire to have convened a Special Meeting of the Party on Wednesday [April 23, 2014]. The purpose of the Special Meeting is to conduct elections of Officers of the Executive Committee as set out in the Constitution.”
Hon O’Neal could not be reached for further comment on the announcement and what might have prompted it.
Hon Fraser said that while cannot offer himself for nomination, if someone nominates him for contesting the position of Leader of the Party he will accept. “If I am nominated, I will not deny those persons who support me the opportunity of seeing the nomination [going forward],” said Fraser.
Another leading member of the VIP Hon Andrew A. Fahie when asked whether he intends to contest the post of VIP Chairman said that he preferred to wait until the meeting takes place before commenting.
