Hon. Fraser hosts 3rd District baseball team to a movie night
According to information posted on his Facebook page, Hon. Fraser took the 3rd District team, which also consists of other players throughout Tortola, to watch the movie ‘42’ starring Chadwick Boseman on May 5, 2013.
The 2013 film ‘42’ is about the life of Jackie Robinson, who became the first African-American baseball player to break the baseball colour barrier. Robinson wore jersey number 42 as a Brooklyn Dodgers player.
Hon. Fraser, who continues to be a champion throughout his political career for youths, education, the elderly and improving the infrastructure of the Virgin Islands, is most often seen in his community interacting with the youths at sporting events and paying visits to his constituents.
After seeing his post on Facebook, this news site caught up with Hon. Fraser and asked him what motivated him to take the baseball team to watch the movie.
Hon Fraser said, “following through on a promise I made at the League Opening on April 13th, last night May 5th 2013, I took the Sea Cows Bay Athletics team to see the Movie No. 42.”
The movie was a documentary of Jackie Robinson's ascent into an all white segregated Major League Baseball as a Negro. The veteran legislator told Virgin Islands News Online that “the objective was not so much as to expose the kids to racism, but to have them appreciate that there was a struggle by their predecessors in order to make the opportunity to play baseball possible.”
Hon. Fraser further stated that, “ I know the kids enjoyed themselves, and I am truly looking forward to doing other things with the youth in the District.”
There were some 16 players from the team that the representative facilitated at the movie, along with coaches and families. The General Manager for the team is Mr. Milton C. McClean, who told this news site that the players all expressed to him their enjoyment of the movie especially, for its educational value and thanked Hon. Fraser for his continued interest in their development.
Over the years, Hon. Fraser has also sponsored many sports teams within the 3rd District, including basketball, softball and horse racing to name a few.
Jack Roosevelt ‘Jackie’ Robinson
Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) was an American baseball player who became the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era.
Mr Robinson broke the baseball colour line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947.
