Hon. Fahie speaks on his alleged role in Dancia Penn’s defeat
In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online, Hon. Fahie acknowledged that he has heard "bits and pieces" but pointed out, “No matter how I turn it, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s utter rubbish!”
Penn, who was the incumbent 8th district representative going into the 2011 general election, lost to the National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate and newcomer Marlon Penn by 101 votes.
However, Hon. Fahie was blamed for her demise, because some individuals believed he encouraged Independent candidate Bevis Sylvester to run so that he could “split the votes”. In the end, Sylvester secured 112 votes.
Against this backdrop, Hon. Fahie told this news agency that such theories are not surprising after an election. “Whenever one loses if it’s a game in sports or a political election, there is always going to be blame whether legitimately or not. I don’t worry about that if it is being said, no one has told me so formally. I have heard bits and pieces but that is not my focus. I always tell the young people this; I don’t let people’s opinion of me become my reality. I would not do anything to destroy my party,” he bluntly stated.
According to him, he has always been dedicated to the Virgin Islands Party (VIP). “...the statistics would show, not the gossip, the statistics will show that we are one of the only districts that brought in the VIP At Large in the top four positions. That does not represent that the people of the first district and their representative were disloyal. If you’re not preaching what you’re living, it would reflect in the votes,” Hon. Fahie added.
As he had mentioned in post election interviews, the 1st district rep reiterated that the VIP members including himself would have to “look inside and see how we can improve. Each one of us made mistakes we have to correct. So I am not going to blame anyone for what happened to me”.
“We have to regroup, we have to restructure. We have to appeal to a cross section of the populace especially the youth, and we have to do a lot of work. Anybody in my party not focusing on that is no true to themselves, not staying true to the cause or making sure that we improve the VIP. So I am not going to lose focus on them [the youth] at all,” the 1st district representative said.
