Hon. Fahie exercising patience with Govt's approach to First District
The Opposition Member and former Minister for Education and Culture declined to mention any of the projects that warranted urgent attention in his district but said he was cognisant of the challenges that came with being a member of opposition and added that he was also a “fair man”.
“I have a long tolerance, so I have given myself a time-frame to see a few things done, not all, because that won’t be possible,” he said.
He said “[projects] have been going slow, but I’m still giving it a little time to see if we could, despite our differences in political methodology, if we could find within ourselves to perform within a respectful manner.”
Hon. Fahie also talked about the need for respecting District Representatives and said “in our [Virgin Islands Party] administration, one of the things we did was respect the District Representatives at all times.”
The First District Representative felt this needed to be done so that “we could try to build the community together in a unified way.” He also felt that this was posing a challenge with regard to some of the projects in his district not being addressed as they should.
He also said that he had made representations about many things and was given many assurances that some would be addressed but did not necessarily expect all the issues to be addressed and was still awaiting completion.
Hon. Fahie said the pace of the completion of projects was challenging but not necessarily frustrating. “I intend to continue to meet the challenge head-on and will continue to deal with it in as respectful a manner as possible,” he said, because he realised that he was not just representing himself but also a group of people.
Other than the projects in the district, Hon. Fahie said he was concerned about the way government has been moving towards stimulating the economy because he felt stimulating the economy was the real role of the government. “… not to do everything, not to put money in people’s hands” he said, “but to stimulate an economy that creates more opportunity for persons. ”
He felt that many of the initiatives being heard about were initiatives that attempted to stimulate the economy by hitting a “grand slam”. “We have to play a lot of small ball economically, in order to stimulate the economy… to ensure that our people don’t lose hope financially and economically” he said.
