ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— "Very soon, I am hopeful that we will be able to come to the public with the design and ultimately move towards construction later sometime this year.”

This is according to Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL) regarding the rebuilding of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, which was demolished in April 2023, due to the building being deemed unsafe.

Hon de Castro disclosed that the Ministry of Education has been actively collaborating with Unite BVI, the Government’s strategic partner in the initiative.

Approvals being finalised

"In keeping with our last response, given our engagement with Unite BVI, who is our partner in pursuit of the rebuild of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, we do have an MOU,” Hon de Castro stated during the inaugural broadcast of Virgin Islands Voice on April 16, 2025.

The Minister further outlined that the project is currently in its critical design phase—a necessary precursor to physical construction.

"There is a process in place, the design phase; We're seeking to get to the end of that phase so that we can move forward and get things going and ultimately get to the construction phase….approvals are being finalised."

Meanwhile, responding to recent public concerns regarding the school's location, Minister de Castro said, “I want to reassure the public that the Althea Scatliffe Primary School will remain in its location. I know that we have gotten some concerns recently regarding the location, but rest assured, the school will be rebuilt in its location."

Hon de Castro said the new edifice, when completed, “Will really speak to a reimagined education system, which we speak about moving full STEAM ahead."

They had no call breaking down the original building.

So the structural engineer declared the building unsafe. Parts of the ceiling fall in overnight at one point. Thank God it wasn’t during school hours and you can still say they had no call breaking it down? So they should have left it up and wait for the roof to fall in and seriously hurt or kill the teachers and students? I guess you wanted the opportunity to come on here and comment that deCastro did not take the advice of the structural engineer and the ASPS roof fell in and hurt or kill the people them children. People like you sickening. When you don’t have anything positive to say don’t say anything at all. But you don’t worry about the breaking down because it will be rebuilt bigger and better and modern. Go talk that now!

Oh Dear. We don't even have plans yet? Then we have decide how we divide the money between our friends and family and with the rest we can build a school of the quality of the new Welcome centre in Trellis.

@ Marty Probasco, did your children go there and inhale the mold? Didn't you know it was deemed unsafe due to structural problems? Well, we don't want our children exposed to unhealthy and dangerous conditions. It is being rebuilt stronger and safer for "OUR" children.
