FISH BAY, Tortola, VI- Christmas time is the season of joy, sharing and caring; however, it is also a time with there is statistically an increase in domestic violence in the [British] Virgin Islands.

This is according to Family Support Network’s Mrs Judith M. Charles.

“The tragedy of this time of year, when the season is one of goodwill, is that it is also the time of year where we record the highest levels of domestic abuse,” Charles stated during a cheque presentation to Family Support Network (FSN) by Drakes Traders Limited on Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

The hardware store in Fish Bay had donated $10,000 to FSN.

Medium to long-term solution for persons in abusive homes

Charles also stated that the needs for each client coming to FSN seeking support in escaping a domestic abuse situation varies and that arrangements are in place to accommodate those that need shelter, “but the cost, which includes 3 basic meals per day per person, is not a constant or something we can adequately budget for based on our assured annual income.

“The same goes for professional counselling that is essential to help people break away from the cycle of abuse and rebuild their self-confidence to start building a sustainable new life away from their abuser.”

Ms Charles continued that the aim of FSN is to provide a medium-to-long term solution for people in abusive situations, “where staying with the abuser seems like the only option based on their income, status or threats levelled at them or their children should they leave the home.”

Congratulations on your work FSN, may you continue to grow, develop and expand and serve a society that is very diverse and have multiple needs. There are men who are also abused (physically, mentally, financially, emotionally) and suffer in silence because of societal stereotypes. Counsellors (social and spiritual) need to be better trained to be more open minded of the events and activities that are taking place.

Women are suffering in silence because they choose to do so. Thing is most of the women that is getting beat up at home go right back to the men that is beating them up. If they go to the police, they don’t want to press charges against their beaters.

One aspect of domestic violence is Parental Alienation.

"The awful outcome of parental alienation is the complete separation of a child or children from a parent. Even more dreadful is that it is deliberately caused, maliciously done, and entirely preventable. This terrible form of child abuse has long-lasting effects for all concerned." (GLENN CARTWRIGHT, PHD)

Thirty-five years ago, when I fought for access to my three children in the BVI, the term parental alienation had only just been coined. There were no books on the subject and no guidance for those expected to advise and judge.

Women must submit to their husbands. A man is the leader of the home and family! If women have an issue with the natural harmony of life, then they need to be reoriented and taught the holy doctrine!

I’m so sorry your mother didn’t love you. How could she? Listen to your views on women and it is a woman’s womb you came out from. You continue with the holy doctrine.

Why people have to wait until Christmas, one day, to be looking for gifts? Christmas is for Children. New Years is for Adults. I hate when grown folks is out here looking for gifts and bonuses and get angry when they don’t get it.

Agreed, there is no law written nor is your boss obligated to hand out bonuses at Christmas. The ones that is looking for bonuses are the ones that is never on time, always late, or calling in. The only thing your boss is obligated to do is pay you for the hours you clock in to work.

It ain’t about the poor fathers is broke. First I will say, If you are NOT A WIFE BEATER, YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN EVEN IF YOU ARE NO LONGER WITH THE MOTHER MY COMMENT IS NOT TOWARDS YOU. SOOOOO! this is all hog poop, hog doop, hog scoop or whatever you choose to refer it to or as. The poor fathers is broke eh? So how is it the poor fathers is broke and they are out here in the latest fashion, at every pan drop, I phones, up in the strip clubs paying for lap dances and sticking dollar bills up in strippers G strings. Up in the drinking spots paying for rounds and your child/children is at home suffering. THAT BRINGS STRESS TO THE HOME TO THE WIFE CHILD/CHILDREN. RATHER THAN TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR PART , YOU RESORT TO STRIKING YOUR WIFE .
