High controversy as Jr Skillful Ballers handed victory in 2021 District League
In a deciding game for the Jr District League Championship tonight, October 9, 2021, at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, sources told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) that the head coach of the Jr Skillful Ballers, Ronald Simmonds aka 'Gola', had staged a protest over who should referee the finals.
Following the protest, the management of the Jr Bayside Blazers reportedly objected to the propositions by Simmonds, calling it ‘unfair,’ given the Jr VG Bayside Blazers did not have an opportunity to decide on a referee nor did they agree with the idea of teams deciding on referees.
Jr Bayside Blazers opt to forfeit game
While some media houses reported that the Bayside Blazers had quit the game, sources familiar with the situation told our news centre that it was the management of Bayside Blazers who got frustrated with the situation, and reportedly decided to forfeit the game, and opting to return to Virgin Gorda.
Bayside Blazers Team Manager, Hon Julian Willock, speaking to VINO on the sidelines of the match said, ‘It is unfair for coaches and players to determine who referees a game. Our job is to come here and play ball and win!”
It is our understanding that coach ‘Gola’ on Wednesday, had also written a letter to the Federation demanding that he did not want two specific referees, including respected FIBA referee Norval A. Young, in the game tonight.

How much can one referee cheat when there are more referees on the floor . Stupidness. When we loose we accept without problems . We can do our own thing up here . We definitely don’t need to be a part of the

As far as I'm concern.VG should 've rec d tje trophy.as our tolla team is the.instigator.of this situation.Never once VG protest about anything during this series but I guess we in Tola think it's tooo much for.VG to 've both championships which they honestly deserve

No coach or team president should dictate who referees a basketball game or any other type of sports competition.
Gola should be ashamed of himself, in fact all involved in this horrible decision making should be ashamed of themselves.
I think the president of the association should have stepped in, cancel and reschedule the game after ironing out the differences with the respective teams. This is a big fail on the association.
