ROAD TOWN, Tortola,VI – Commissioner of Police Mark Collins is asking for the public’s help in ending the rise in violence marked by the recent spate of firearm incidents around the Territory.

The Commissioner noted the need for wise counsel from those with family members and friends who are either aware of or participating with individuals discharging firearms and inflicting harm.

“In less than a month, we have seen two murders and Saturday night’s near fatality along with a number of other firearm-related incidents. The risk of injury or death to innocent bystanders is very high. Our community deserves to feel and be safe. We need all who are either party to these actions or participating themselves to refrain from any more bloodshed. Please consider the consequences of decisions made in the heat of the moment. Help us to restore calm,” he said.

He noted that his officers are committed to identifying offenders, but they cannot do so alone. “I urge anyone who has any information on Saturday night’s shooting or other recent incidents to come forward,” he said.

Persons can confidentially call the CrimeStoppers line 800-8477 (TIPS) or overseas, call 1-284-800-8477 with information about any of the recent shootings or illegal firearms in the Territory.

Mr C.O.P for the life of me, where are all those R.V..I.P..F Members does be? It is so ironic that back in the days when the Force was very much smaller, you could still find Officers walking the Beat( day and night). Now the Force is extremely larger and consist of various Units, you hardly see any foot patrol( except when they are in training new Recruits) or you just see a patrol jeep drive by to go collect lunch, officer for duty or running personal errands. How in tarnation you want citizens to assist these mediocre Officers.

They are there just not in uniform feeling big undercover as if that's helping anything. Facts.

Why do you think they took those officers bar hopping on the boat and claimed it was official police business. Dress them in uniform if they are officers on duty.

Police do not understand our culture must less the Commissioner. How you going manage what you don't understand? Then you have the mix of other caribbean countries causing an even bigger muck trying to blend in to what they don't understand. You have to understand a man's culture before to come to his country.

Section 5(4) of the Retirement Age Act 2016,states that-"If a black policeman age 55 pass a prehensive physical examination, the officer may get an extension to continue service in the Force:And the AG gave a legal opinion on the law.
But the white COPs Matthews and Collins disregarded the law,and retiring black policemen unlawfully at age 55;but white UK police joining the Force,at age 55 and older.
Tell COP Matthews,to make public to the PWA and the Police Service Commission, the AG legal opinion on the law.Because COP Matthews did not publish the legal opinion to the PWA.

it is amazing we now have more police in the land yet crime rate is up; as a matter of fact police are deeply involved with crime(look at the court records) so no one picking on police

you hardly see any police on foot patrol especially in our capital, some say what police do now is sit in a room and watch the cct cameras

with out the visible presence of law enforcement every thing will go down hill: there are vehicles on public roads with all colour lights; some not insured; some driving without a valid license

the police need to put effort into moving about this small society and stop relying 100% on informers

with all the experts from great britain spying here and spying there yet rate of solved crimes is very few(collecting big checks monthly for what

We need a Curfew Law back in this place. I suggest the Curfew Law starts from 12:00 Midnight to 5:00 am and those who have to be out during these mentioned hours have ID document from the RVI Police Force stating so.

I does hear gun shots firing all hours of the Night especially in the Purcell and Free Bottom area and young men all hours of the Night making noise with these scooters, bikes and boom box.

There are more that 75 plus Unsolved Murders in the British Virgin Islands and the toll is climbing steadily.

I guess we have to wait until they start shooting the Police Officers, the Politicians or other persons in High Society or the White People before anything is done.

Why is there not a local officer to hang out in these areas?
The area of the last two shootings are popular night entertainment areas & popular laundry. Its the middle of town!

Iv never seen one police on that stretch to the laundry. Plenty women restaurants shops no police.
Stop relying on plain clothes officers in a small community.

How can they serve or deter when they are disguised?

Put the tactics away and bring out the visible community minded officers!

Next problem officers can not properly patrol or go to those entertainment areas for prolonged periods without everyone getting stiff at the predator lurking.

Have you ever seen a area completely socially dead because police were sniffing around? No one wants to stick around for that. That must be why we have all these plain clothes officers running around.

In a functioning system ideally what we should be thinking is I am glad this uniformed cop is here as a potential witness & protector for the community.

In reality the COPS are more likely to lock up a good portion of the community, & a high percent of night life loving folks, if they stay around because everyone is smoking weed.

Those not out on the street are in their homes, apartments and villas doing it. Legalize it, decriminalize it.

On a night out many people are safer by 1. not encountering any criminals 2. having nothing to do with any police. (Lots of potential downsides & no benefits)

Couple decades ago travel to America locals will tell you dont even look at the police as a black man. Today its the same story. Is that the model we aspire to?

I once went to report a urgent environmental issue and the officer is acting lazy plus looking like he wants to search me for no reason. Only his partner had sense to step in cordially and address the environmental issue rather than see me as the issue. Sad situation when officer first see criminal out of the community. Why go back if that's the response. We all heard about the guy that went to report a crime and a dime bag fell out his pocket. He's probably blind and deaf now.

One unprofessional person can not taint every officers conduct but it is concerning when officers dont understand their role as servants of the community. The power & salary goes straight to some of their heads like politicians.

Protect & serve the people. Get that right for US & everyone will want to be a police.
