GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI- Heavy rainfall Friday evening and throughout Saturday, November 5, 2022, resulted in the usual flooding in low-lying areas across the territory.

Additionally, rocks were strewn onto the roadways, although quickly removed by Public Works Department (PWD) early this morning, November 6, 2022.

JvD feels the brunt

Over in Jost van Dyke; however, the heavy rainfall resulted in roads, particularly between Little Harbour and White Bay, being damaged.

This has caused one of its residents to call on the government to take better care of the roads on Jost van Dyke since, according to him, the Sister Island does not have the luxury of paved roads as seen on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

“Some of the hillside roads are not paved and we making it work for us but we need government to grade them now and again with their hymac,” Mr Gregory A. Callwood stated, adding that now more than ever the roads need attention.

‘Tourist season is upon us’- Callwood

He said the hillside roads are in terrible condition, making it a challenge for persons living on the hillsides.

“The tourist season is here upon us and they [tourists] need to see the beauty of the islands,” Mr Callwood, a taxi driver, stated.

He shared that the roads on Jost van Dyke were damaged since the floods of August 2017, but have now deteriorated even further, adding that sections of the roads have undermined and collapsed.

Mr Callwood said in one area, a section of the road collapsed and damaged water pipelines. This has resulted in residents currently being out of water.

"The road going up to the water tank [reservoir] is in bad condition and the Water and Sewerage [Department] truck always breaking down," Mr Callwood added.

The outspoke JvD resident said there are at least three hillside roads urgently in need of paving.

He listed those as White Bay Hill, Hatchette Hill Road, which leads to the 'antenna cell tower', and the area known as the 'S Corner'.

Mr Callwood said other areas of the roads can be "graded" for now.

Trying to do his best is not good enough. You know I hate to say it and hope it never happens on BVI soil but it is only a matter of time before there is a serious road accident due to these deplorable roads that is paved with black food color, flour paste and glue.

We all take these things for granted because of the culture we all practice. The Gov't has a statutory obligation to the general motoring public to maintain public roads. The standard to which these should be maintained has never been challenged. However, should any member of the public were to get injured and can prove that it was a direct cause of the poor condition of the road, and sue gov't and win, then and only then will this obligation be taken seriously.
Dodging potholes and ending up in the path of oncoming traffic seems to be the norm these days.

It’s time to make the minimum vehicle registration $500 for passenger cars up to $5000 for heavy trucks. Let the road users pay for the roads !! Simple
