Health Authority mulls introduction of cancer registry - CEO
This is part of a wider cancer prevention programme that the organisation is examining. “We’re looking at screening services and screening capabilities, even developing a tumour register or cancer registry,” the CEO stated.
Though the BVIHSA is already currently conducting tracking for morbidity and mortality in relation to cancer, the organisation will also be looking at cancer specific diseases, getting persons into care and treatment plans which are specific to their family’s disposition or their predisposition or exposure to carcinogens.
Mrs Carty-Baptiste said the BVIHSA currently has raw numbers, specifically related to incidences of cancer, but would not be able to roll out a full-fledged programme on this basis as this would not be prudent for the organisation.
“You want to look at prevalence, you want to look at some of the family history and other issues when it comes to mortality and morbidity,” she said.
The CEO said she is looking at January, 2014 for the implementation of the new measures. She posited that it would be at this time that the BVIHSA is poised to regroup as an organisation and develop a new strategic plan for the next three to five years.
Meanwhile, Mrs Carty-Baptiste expressed that the Authority’s overarching task is to decrease its total dependence on government subvention.
She also indicated that the organisation will continue to place emphasis on public/private partnerships as part of its strategy in securing innovative opportunities, especially given its success with HIMA/Health over the past few weeks.
She disclosed that the BVIHSA has been seeing approximately 18-20 patients per clinical day for some of its specialty services.
