ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Whilst all the attention has been on Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin, two of the territory’s top athletes are also competing at the 15th International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Beijing, China.

Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, competing in her sixth straight IAAF World Championships, was the first to see action when she ran in the 100m preliminaries shortly after midnight last night, August 22, 2015.

She had qualified for the Worlds with her fastest time since 2011 of 11.14, which she ran to win the USA Club Championships in New York, but finished 5th in her Heat in a time of 11.47, which was a non progressing time and placed her 33rd out of 52 sprinters.

Harrigan-Scott had tied for 31st in the 100m at the 2013 World Championships. She made the semi-finals at Worlds in 2009, taking 11th, with a time of 11.34 in Berlin.

At the Olympic Games in 2008, which were also held in Beijing at the same “Birds Nest” Stadium, Harrigan-Scott ran 11.36.

Malone to leap into action Wednesday

Long jumper Chantel E. Malone had come within one centimetre of the qualifying mark, jumping 6.69 metres at the second North American, Central American and Caribbean Track and Field Championships earlier this month and had to face an anxious wait for late inclusion, whilst the BVIAA Track and Field Officials pleaded her case to be allowed to compete.

In her favour was her performances overall, which placed her amongst the top 32 Jumpers from around the World and she was given the opportunity to compete in her third successive World Championships.

Malone will carry her 6.69-meter personal best into the competition, an improvement of 4 centimeters on her previous best. In 2013 she finished 21st with a 6.40 meters effort and in 2011 she was 30th in Korea with 6.12.

Malone will take to the Long Jump pit on Wednesday August 26, 2015 at 10.20pm.

Beijing is 12 hours ahead of the Virgin Islands.

Its the B.V.I way, no teams spirit, no heart, no togetherness, bunch of fakes in your face when you winning but through the hard times, looking for someone to have your back or whisper a kind word its hard to find! Not when you can hide behind a keyboard and spit on someone effort.....

    What cruel comments!

I am certain that those who placed lower than Tahesia did were congratulated by their countrymen for their valiant efforts. To my humble mind, there is no shame in placing 5th. We must be careful about the mindset we inculcate in our youths, and in our community in general.

Thank you, Tahesia, for representing the BVI!

All the best to Chantel in her upcoming event!

its not cruel, its just she isnt performing, getting older(34) and likely not better. if its just a tourism gimmick then say so, stop pretending like she's good enough to be or get to be a top 30 athlete

I truly dislike negative comments. While Harrigan didnt make it through sports she allow the world to know about the BVI. Look at it this way not everyone was born to be a winner. She has the guts to go infront of the world while some of us just sit here make negative comments and cant do a thing. I wish Harrigan and Malone the best and i will cheer for them also..Even though my native country is doing well this is where i reside and proud to call home. Go BVI!!! WIN OR LOSE.

Thank You Tahesia for the hard work and effort....you didn't place in the upper 3 as yet but you are still a champion...may i suggest something try changing the coach for a season or two and if no improvement, retire and be a mentor for the younger generation.... (Athletes) watching them take Gold because of you is the Greatest achievement of all.
