Haitian Stars lose game but win respect of opponents

A much improved unit compared to the side that went winless in the 2011 National League, Haitian Stars held pre-game favourites One Love scoreless and in fact should have been ahead when left winger Reuben Stoby came close to scoring in the early minutes of the game. Stoby pounced on a loose ball just inside the box and was brought down by a defender, however, the referee saw otherwise.
One Love gained most of the possession and were constantly on the attack but were frustratingly held off by the Haitian Stars defence.
Three minutes on the restart, One Love finally breached the Haitian Stars defence when Carl Stewart bullied his way past a defender to slot home. They would then go 2-nil up in the 64th minute when Eric Campbell found the back of the nets from point blank range from a cross from the right wing.
Haitian Stars didn’t seem to be broken by the two goals but instead began to push forward and were rewarded in the 75th minute. A free kick directed to the goal area by Stoby found a group of players in the box and after a mad scramble Ricardo Lynch was finally able to kick the ball into the goal.
An equaliser, however, was out of the reach for the Haitian Stars but although they were defeated for the first time in the 2012 League they certainly earned the respect of the One Love players who acknowledged that they were given a run for their money.
Haitian Stars, now being considered the dark horse of the League, have little time to sulk on their loss as they play Panthers on Wednesday December 12, 2012.
The elusive win for Haitian Stars was finally captured when they overcame hosts VG United 2-1 on Sunday November 25, 2012. Former goal-keeper turned striker Gregory Atime was the man on target for the Haitian Stars, who registered their first win in any official competition since the club was formed just over a year ago. They then went on to draw 1-1 with Rebels before being edged 2-1 by One Love.
