GEORGETOWN, Guyana, SA- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana has updated its website to include that citizens of the Virgin Islands do not require a visa to enter the country.

There was some confusion surrounding the visa requirements for Virgin Islands (VI) nationals travelling to Guyana after reports emerged last month of a VI national being denied entry into Guyana while transiting through Barbados.

Acknowledging receiving conflicting accounts regarding the travel requirements, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) at a press conference on January 23, 2025, said: "Some persons have said that they've been able to travel to Guyana on their BVI passport with no problem; Others have told me otherwise. So, we will confirm that those visas are not required."

The Virgin Islands did not appear on the November 14, 2023, list by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana of countries not requiring a visa to enter the South American country. It also did not appear on the list of countries requiring a visa.

Updated website includes VI

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana; however, updated its website on January 28, 2025, to include that citizens of the Virgin Islands do not require a visa to enter the country.

The Government of the Virgin Islands stated on February 5, 2025, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana had confirmed that Citizens of the Virgin Islands travelling on BOTC passports did not require visas to enter Guyana.

It was in October 2024 that the Virgin Islands removed the visa restrictions for Guyanese nationals as part of its strategy for forging a relationship with Guyana.
