Greenland Recreational Park for October 25 opening
In fact the Hon. Minister gave the date of October 25, 2012 for the commissioning of the project.
Hon. Walwyn said, “The Greenland Field has been out of commission for some time and we have working diligently to have it back in a state where the people of the East End / Long Look community and beyond can use the facility once again.”
The Hon. Minister noted that it was after some four years that phase one of the project was nearing completion. Work on the Greenland Field started in 2009 and was stalled for a number of reasons and even came to a complete stop before restarting again this year, the Minister explained.
The works on Phase I of the project were given an October deadline by the Hon. Minister and included the completion of the basketball court, perimeter walls, fencing, drainage, softball field, lights and a cricket pitch.
Hon. Walwyn further explained that while working on the softball field, some adjustments were made for the baseball players to have adequate space to practice and hence the fence needed to be adjusted.
The Hon. Minister also complained that the figure of $500,000, which was given to the Ministry of Education in November 2011 to complete the project, was and continued to be difficult to work with considering all the works that had to be done to complete phase I, added that but the Ministry persevered.
He further stated that every effort was made to ensure that the budget “was maintained without compromising the quality of the end product.” He also noted that they had to work through a number of inefficiencies and problems that were allegedly inherited.
The Minister assured everyone, who may have doubts about whether the field would be ready anytime soon, that a dramatic change would be visible by October 15, 2012.
He then declared that it would be opened on October 25, 2012 and invited the Honourable Speaker Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe and all Members of the HOA to attend.
