Grade 2 BFEC students visit historical sites on Tortola
“Today we are here visiting the seven historical sites in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Social Studies curriculum. We went to the Sunday Morning Well, the remnants of William Thornton’s house, the church that the slaves built, Mount Healthy and they did a little tour within the Carrot Bay area,” said teacher Beryl B. Vanterpool.
She said too that the students were also supposed to go to the Dungeon in Pockwood Pond but this had to be cancelled because of work that was going on there at the time.
“The focus is to get them aware and increase their awareness of some of the Virgin Islands’ history and some of the historical sites,” said Vanterpool.
She said that as the Grade Two teacher she realised that much emphasis was not being put on the Virgin Islands’ history by the elementary teachers.
“So I have taken up a small project of taking pictures of all of the historical sites of the Virgin Islands and I will put them on a compact disc, so that it can be in the school for the teachers to use. So if they cannot go to the historical sites they can view the photographs and the information,” she said.
The children said they enjoyed the visit and thanked teacher Vanterpool for taking the time to bring them to Tortola for the class visit.
