ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) says the Government will continue to invest heavily into education, recognizing its impacts on youths and the local economy.

“Education is not just an investment in individuals; it is an investment in the very fabric of our society.  That is why the Premier and Minister of Finance and the entire government of the Virgin Islands is ensuring that we, put our money where our mouth is,” Hon de Castro said in a recent speech for Educators Professional Day on August 28, 2023.

She said that strategy will ensure that the government fuels economic growth, drives innovation, and create a skilled workforce by ensuring that we provide education the funding and resources that it needs.

Focus on S.T.E.A.M

The minister added that for the new school yet the education sector continues to move ‘Full S.T.E.A.M. ahead,” through the inclusion of new subjects at the secondary level, students will eagerly explore the intricate landscapes of coding, programming, robotics, and engineering.

“The inclusion of these digital skills in our curriculum is akin to arming our students with tools that enable them to sculpt their dreams, to engineer their aspirations, and to paint their future in the vibrant hues of technology.”

In a message to Educators, she said in today's world, where the heartbeat of progress is measured in technological strides, digital literacy is paramount.

“If you think about it, just as a sailor navigates the seas guided by the stars, if we continue moving Full S.T.E.A.M. ahead, so too will our students navigate the complex currents of this digital landscape. As Minister of Education, I can already picture those classrooms pulsating with excitement as the spark of innovation ignites, as the joy of learning becomes infectious, and as the hum of creativity and the thrill of discovery permeates the air,“ Hon De Castro Shared.

Reshaping education

The Minister affirmed that as Government continues to commit to fostering a STEAM-infused education system, "we are not just preparing students for the future; we are equipping them to be the architects of the future."

“We are sculpting problem solvers, and critical thinkers, trailblazers who will chart new territories and rewrite the narratives of progress in these Virgin Islands as they become the pioneers of industries, propelling our economy forward.”

She said that as a former education, she believes that it is through schools, that tomorrow's leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs, and artists will emerge, ready to tackle every single challenge and opportunity that lies ahead in the Virgin Islands.

The only time this girl speaks to people is when she wants their support. Other than that she has no use for anyone. She needs to do better with her people skills.

Wondering how you talking about money for STEAM initiatives and you all reopening schools in same condition or worse than last school year..no deep cleaning, no fixing of plumbing issues, landscaping, painting... ohhhh and did anybody mention mould?? You guys are so unbelievable. More teachers will resign as the working conditions suckkkkk... can you please tell the public about home school options as we the parents tired of the same BS year in and year out. Education requires TRUE Leadership and a LOVE and passion for students and their future that is unwavering and non- political.

Ms.DeCastro every time I drove by the Althea Scatliffe Primary school grounds. My 6 year old child keep asking when are they going to rebuild the school. Soooo…When are you guys going to rebuild the school?? Before you think of investing the money anywhere please rebuild that school. This government is too delinquent when it comes to education.
