ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says the government will continue to find ways to help businesses facing difficulties in the Virgin Islands (VI).

The Premier was at the time speaking at the BVI Business Banking Expo 2024 on the various services already afforded to businesses.

Helping businesses

“Through the government and our agencies and independent partners, there are a lot of initiatives and avenues for helping small businesses. For instance, we have education and training programmes such as those at the age H. Lavity Stoutt Community College,” he said at Treasure Isle on June 13, 2024.

The Premier added, “There are programmes where large businesses and professionals provide mentorship and technical assistance to smaller ones. They're microfinancing facilities through Unite BVI... and there is support available through the Business Association, such as the BVI Chamber of Commerce.”

He said while some small businesses are able to chart their route to success, others still have difficulty and the government needs to find ways to help them.

“I see this BVI Business Banking Expo as a very important forum for businesses, entrepreneurs and the financial institutions to have fruitful dialogue and to better understand what each expects from the other," while adding that the expo was an opportunity for finding solutions to the barriers that micro, small and medium businesses face in accessing funding in the Virgin Islands.

Banking Expo applauded

The Premier applauded everyone who has contributed to the staging of this BVI Business Banking Expo such as the Minister of Financial Services, Labor and Trade, Deputy Premier Honourable Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) and others who have been very passionate about helping entrepreneurs to spread their wings.

“Thank you for this humane service to the BVI, I'm confident that a lot of goodwill will come out of [the] BVI Business Banking Expo. I am also very pleased to see individuals from the sister islands. I'm glad that they are being taken into account, in terms of banking services to them,” he added.

Announced earlier in the year by Hon Smith, the event aimed to showcase banking industry innovations and trends, offer valuable knowledge to small business owners and entrepreneurs, empower them with the tools for success and facilitate networking, and enable direct interaction between the financial sector and businesses, thus promoting mutual understanding and cooperation.

This is exactly where the need for assistance is more needed. Why grant money to businesses when most people can make ends meet. After helping businesses, who is going to patronized them. Time to stop enabling suppression and prioritize the needs and resources for the Territory and its People. STOP finding means to handout to who can strive and give to the struggling people. These are the backbones of this territory and all being done is they are being stomped upon. Time to get off their backs. It's beyond heartbreaking what is happening in the Virgin Islands. Our People are perishing and it's only getting worse. SMDH

How many have already gone out of business and not even a phone call from you; but let's talk about party and you're there front and center. Shameful, just shameful! You're nothing but a Pinocchio. All the districts are in bad shape, but the district you represent is the worse. Please step down before you drag us all down. Please!

Nice. Great. I have more confidence in you than the Hon. Tricksher . Here is my concern. How.?. What will be the process. We don't want a situation where the people who don't need it get it and those in need get refused because of Politics and personal feelings...

Young man and also B.V.I current Premier Natalio Sujande Wheatley, who of the two is more in need of government assistance? Is it businesses that have mismanaged theirs business venture or people without jobs, others low paid (minimum wage) salary?
Why were you given eye, but can hardly see, ears, but hear only what you chose to hear, mouth to speak, but only what you chose to speak, a mind to think, but only what you chose to think, if pleasing to you, a position that you didn't deserved, people to lead, when in fact you are unable to lead?
The answer to the above questions is because you are been deceived by the devil, and those that support are being decided by you mostly because of their their greedy mindset.

During Covid we saw the government support certain businesses but only those owned by Belongers and BVislanders. Will the support offered again discriminate in this way? The consequence is felt by the employees who are themselves often Belongers and BVIslanders.

    Job Creation and Jobs Report

With so many locals unemployed who may have gave up looking for work because most businesses simply cannot afford to pay there employees anything more than a Minimum Wage to pay for basic necessities like rent/mortgage, utilities, food and transpertation, and hire staff with wages that only foriegn workers are willing to work for that are causing our local people to turn to our government Social Welfare Program for assistance that is putting a strain on our government resources and funding

Why don’t our government consider creating a Government Uniforms Department to make uniforms for government workers and school kids, School Bags/Backpacts and Computer Cases/Bags, Government Legal Pad Note Book Portfolios, artifacts to sell to Craft Market Vendors for air and cruise arrivals to purchase and offer our local unemployed people, Seniors and Retirerees who’s Pension is insufficient to keep pace with the Cost of Living increases, in-addition to hiring unemployed High School Graduates and pay them a livable wage of $12 or $15 Hourly Wage

Hmm what a controversial statement when an entrepreneur cannot even apply for a Vendor's Permit neither pitch a tent where tourists go. Why do we lie as a country for everything!! Government willfully holds ya back and that's that. Also chase that f** ^%$£" named Bryan off Long Bay beach then maybe we won't damage the tourism industry we have so far and he can go do Shipping Registry work & go home. Sowande allows everything that goes on then manipulatively deflects it.
