Govt signs $1.7M in contracts for infrastructural works
Government entered into a $15.67M loan agreement with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in 2012 to rehabilitate a number of roads and bridges throughout the territory.
The contracting companies are Autland Heavy Equipment Co. Ltd who secured a contract for 670,261.84 for works in the Long Trench community. These works encompass the construction of three reinforced concrete retaining walls, resurfacing of the damaged and undermined pavement along the left side of the road and the construction of a new drainage system, which includes construction of a pipe culvert, and construction of a reinforced concrete cascading drain at the outfall of the culverts within the site.
This makes the fourth contract for Autland Heavy Equipment Co. under the government of the VI $15.67M loan.
The greater chunk of the contract sum went to a newcomer in the government’s pool of contractors, Mr Ray A. Garraway, owner and managing director of Quality Construction Limited which was awarded the sum of $1,041,551.75 for works in the Huntums Ghut community.
The scope of work in the Huntums Ghut areas involves the construction of approximately 980 feet of reinforced concrete road pavement, and the construction of a combination of reinforced concrete box culverts, kerbs and slipper and drains approximately 2500 feet long.
Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool (R4), in giving some details about the works at a signing ceremony earlier today in the conference room of the Premier’s Office, noted that there are additional works for the Huntums Ghut area.
“There were also three separate slope failure sections, along the Lower Huntums Ghut Road and these are now being addressed. In addition, the works include the construction of three mass concrete/boulder pack matrix retaining structures, and the rehabilitation of damaged pavement structures.”
The works for which the two contracts were signed are expected to be completed within six months.
The Minister said works at Fortune Ghut are progressing well and should be completed by the end of the year, while rehabilitation works at Harrigan Estate will soon be out to tender.
To this end, Hon Vanterpool encouraged all qualifying contractors to bid for the execution of the prescribed works when they are advertised.
“This is a unique opportunity for you to take part in the rebuilding and continued development of our Virgin Islands,” he said.
