ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As holiday celebrations continue across the Virgin Islands (VI), the government has issued a notice reminding bar owners of the process to obtain permission to remain open beyond midnight on special occasions.

These extensions apply to all premises selling intoxicating liquor, except for clubs and hotels, and must comply with Section CAP 42 (1) of the local statutes, the notice stated.

The government emphasised that only applications with all supporting documents will be considered and that the Financial Secretary is authorised to grant bar hour extensions beyond those stipulated by law.

Noise permits, however, must be applied for separately through the Commissioner of Police.

Government has since urged applicants to follow the outlined procedures to ensure smooth processing of requests, reiterating that only complete applications submitted in a timely manner will be reviewed.

Notice issued too late?

According to the missive, issued only yesterday, December 16, 2024, applicants must submit a formal letter to the Financial Secretary outlining the occasion, the date, and the duration of the requested extension.

Additionally, applications must be submitted at least two weeks before the scheduled event with, notably, valid trade and liquor licenses accompanying the application, and where licenses have expired, proof of renewal such as receipts must be provided.

However, one bar owner, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed to our News Centre their frustration over the notice being put out only yesterday with applications needing to be made two weeks in advance of the date for extended hours being requested.

“If you are a small man this can hurt your Christmas plan. Hardly enough time for New Years’ applications to be made,” they said.

The business of issuing important notices such as these they added “need to stop”.

When contacted, Financial Secretary Mr Jeremiah G.A. Frett told our News Centre in response to concerns raised, “This is nothing new but simply a reminder of the requirements.”

Did you notify the Spanish bars on Main Street and Long Bush. If not why, I live in the area and have to suffer thru this every weekend starting on Thursday. It goes on sometimes until 3am in the morning. I know that other areas that have such bars complain about the same thing. I know this is not new but please enforce it for the upcoming holidays. Some of us have small children and need the rest and I seriously can't take no more of this. Plus, they are throwing the empty bottles and cup all over people yard and making it look like you don't clean your place.

What difference does it make. When you call the police, they take forever to respond. It would appear that they rarely issue fines as there are repeat offenders who have continued with the loud noise immediately after the police left. My point is, if there is no enforcement of the law, of what good is the law?

“Nothing new, just a reminder” this rule is enforced almost as much as the requirements for scooters to have insurance and a license plate!

I am definitely not in favor of wild-like human behaviors no time of the year. But it amazed that after more than a hundred years of wild-like human behaviors, our present festival favored (Jam Fest Premier only now pretending to be Holier that thou.

Every year there are three distinct season the spiked wild like and untamed parting more than any other times, expect occasionally Music Fest unruly Performers led by our Premier.
    These three times are:
    1. New Year Day celebration:. Plenty rum and others brain altercation substances.

    2. Emancipation Festivities, July -August: Plenty rum consumption, youths on the loose all night, bedroom activities publicized (street strip tease publicized, and Christmas celebrations, thousands of gallons of intoxicated liquid been drunk, unwanted, and others accident, increase in elegal drugs consumption, etc., etc

In my opinion the Topic Issue is a very pretentious show of power that would not be obeyed, even though it should. But our Premier does not lead by example, therefore things will continue to get uncontrollably for us.

Please stop blaming the UK, the Governor, the CoI Commission and the RVIPF, even though they partly deserved a part of the blame, our political Leaders and others of the same or similar mindset are deserve the greater blame.

Oh, Oh, I did for to mention some crooked Pastors and high past government workers.

God our Creator is the only and only TRUTH.

Let God be Truth in our lives daily for a better future for us adults, our children and Grand children, too. Amen.

Bar owners have known for years that their licensing has to be up to date to operate past midnight. This is not new. Those applying now will not meet the deadline within 2 weeks. Why didn't this reminder come out in November?

There are too many bars! The Spanish bars are the worst because they have no respect for the people that live nearby and trust me, Spanish bars are everywhere. They keep noise day and night. They become totally unbearable from Thursday into the weekend. How did we get to this place? This emergent culture of bars everywhere and blasting loud music nonstop for hours should have been curtailed a long time ago. We need to act on it right now. CALL THE POLICE ON THEM CONTINUOUSLY. Eventually the police will be forced to do their job and maybe, the lazy politicians will actually try to out proper noise laws in place.
