ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - It might be a long wait, hopefully not as long as the Peebles Hospital, but Government is hoping to construct a performing arts centre in the Virgin Islands (VI).

This was announced yesterday February 8, 2012 by Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn at a press conference called by Follow the Movement (FTM) to announce details of its 5th Annual Top 7 @7 Music Awards Show slated for March 3.

According to Hon. Walwyn, at the end of their first four years in office, Government would hope to have in hand the plans for the building of the Virgin Islands performing arts centre.

Minister Walwyn also emphasised that Government has a desire to support the arts now and forever and over the next four years would be working to facilitate more opportunities where local talents could be recognised and given a larger stage to perform.

"We also recognise that it is important to have education and the facilities to support the arts. We will be looking at the arts in the public schools and how to improve access to technology and training,” he disclosed.

A staunch supporter of FTM, Minister Walwyn also said he was pleased to see the Movement develop to the extent where it is. He also said that Virgin Islanders have always been singing and have reached to the stage where they have gained international recognition such as Iyaz, and Kamau Georges, who will be travelling to the 54th Grammy Awards for his work on one of Lady Gaga’s songs and also Melanie Amaro, who he termed as the VI’s very own.

He also attributed this success to the guidance and teachings of many musicians and teachers in the Virgin Islands including Elmore Stoutt.

FTM has been instrumental in promoting local artistes through the airwaves of Zrod 103.7 FM, and as such, is committed to the development of the music industry in the Virgin Islands.

According to FTM, its mission is to provide a forum for young people to contribute positively to the community through utilization of their creative abilities, whilst equipping them with tools to promote growth and development.

The 5th annual Follow The Movement Top 7 @7 Awards Show will be headlined by the Virgin Islands very own Travis Walters, now known as Travie Rozae.

Travie Rozae, who recently released his first single “See Her in You”, made his mark after twice performing on the annual show.

The Eileen Parsons Auditorium is more than enough right now. Instead of building another building, fix what we have and incorparate some of these plans with them. Lets get a proper high school, expand the multipurpose complex to include tennis courts, swimming pool, squash courts etc. and run it like a YMCA, so the youth will have somewhere to go and getr interested in their health and other sport exposure. Put pressure on HLSCC to get a proper facilities plan to build dorms so we can attract more regional students and move to university level with bachelor degrees and online courses. THATS MONEY IN THE BANK. TELL THE CABINET OF HLSCC STOP SLEEPING AND GET MORE AGRESSIVE WITH GETTING ACCREDITATION!!!! So many other things needs to be done just not another building.

I so agree with your post except for expanding the Multipurpose Complex, there is no land to expand that. If VIP had listen to the people, it was suppose to build up by the College and then include all those extra goodies you spoke about. I really wish Lavity was alive, the politicians of today think 5 years down the road and not 30 years like Lavity did.

I think I would agree with you about priorities. I definitely think I would want a second high school and other badly needed things first (especially in the area of education and the youth and probably health). Not that this is a bad thing or a bad idea but as you say there other things I would like to say come on stream before that.

This is definately a bad move right now especially since they said we dont have any money. We could improve in what we have already. Minister this not a priority now or in the future!

I say refurbish the Briercliffe Hall.. It can easily be transformed to that in the picture. Common people, no need to waste money to build when we already have something existing... and basically doing just that "existing." Hardly ever gets used.
